Three-speed centrifugal fan draws air into the unit with 360 degree air intake. The air then passes through 2 pre-filters, 15 lbs of activated carbon, 60 sq. ft. of certified HEPA filter media and a HEGA carbon cloth. Clean air is then released from the directional airflow output vent on the top right side of the unit.

The Austin Air Bedroom Machine combines the best of Austin's filtration technology to include a certified HEPA filter, 15 lbs of proprietary blend carbon and a HEGA carbon cloth. This filtration combination gives the Bedroom Machine the ability to surpass the filtration levels of the other Austin Air air purifiers and offer a 1-2 punch to chemicals, gases, and odors.
Pluses:
- The Austin Air Bedroom Machine truly offers complete air cleaning. It removes everything from dust and mold spores to ammonia gas thanks to a large particle pre-filter you can vacuum from the outside, medium particle pre-filter, 15 lbs of activated carbon blend, a HEPA filter with over 60 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA filter material, and a final stage filter consisting of a military activated carbon cloth which maximizes the gas filtration.
- The Austin Air Bedroom Machine provides excellent gas, chemical & odor filtration with 15 pounds of an anthracite carbon and zeolite blend in the 3rd stage of filtration followed by a military fiber carbon cloth in the 5th and final stage of air cleaning.
- Filters last up to 5 years. The filters used by the Austin Air Bedroom Machine air purifier can last up to 5 years before needing to be replaced. The testing team was impressed that the only maintenance required was to replacing the filter every 5 years and periodically vacuum the large pre-filter from outside the unit. However, after quite a few years of personal experience with the Austin Air units, we can report that when running them constantly 24/7, a more realistic life expectancy for the filters is 2 to 4 years, with the carbon becoming saturated before the HEPA filter. None the less, the filters are protected by a 5 year pro-rated guarantee.
- Reasonable filter replacement costs. The Austin Air Bedroom Machine’s average annual replacement cost are $104 to $157 which is less than most of the higher end air cleaners on the market. The price of the unit and replacement filters may cause hesitation for some buyers, but keep in mind the filters only need replacing every 3-5 years and you are getting certified true HEPA filter media and double the gas filtration of most comparable models. When all cost and value analysis is done, this unit looks very good next to the competition.
- The Austin Air Bedroom Machine air purifier has a steel housing with a baked-on powder coat finish. It is a good, safe choice for those irritated by plastic off-gassing.
- Austin Air’s reputation is excellent and they have been in business for many years and stand behind their product with a 5 year warranty on parts and labor. They are also one of the only manufacturer’s to offer a 5 year pro-rated guarantee on their filters!
Minuses:
- Our reviewers found the Austin Air Bedroom Machine to be noisy on high speed. High fan speed is best suited for quick cleaning or for use when you are not in the room. The medium speed is okay if there is already some background noise. The low speed is not whisper quiet, but it is quiet enough to be used while sleeping and is good for those who like the sound of white noise.
- The Austin Air Bedroom Machine does not have a filter change indicator which makes it difficult to determine when the filter needs changing. The filter is supposed to last up to 5 years but we recommend checking it annually when you replace the large particle pre-filter to make sure it still looks ok. When the HEPA turns a dark grey to black/brown it is time to change it. When the carbon becomes saturated you can also start to smell it, which is another way to know its time to replace the filter.
- Replacing the filters is not a 60 second job. We found that in order to really clean the pre-filter it is necessary to remove the bottom plate by removing 4 screws and take it out from the air purifier to give it a thorough cleaning. This is a bit time consuming, so we would recommend replacing the pre-filter once a year. Replacing the filters is a bit tricky as the cylindrical filter is heavy and the bottom plate must be perfectly in line with the holes in order to tightly screw it back together.
- Austin Air overstates the Bedroom Machines maximum area coverage. They claim it will clean the air in a room up to 1500 sq. ft. with 2 air changes per hour, however that estimate is based on the CMF of the fan and not actual delivered CFMs. Our testing team review the Bedroom Machine’s delivered CFMs and came to the conclusion that for allergy or asthma sufferers, the recommended maximum room coverage is 313 sq. ft. achieving 6 air changes per hour while running on the high fan speed.
Summary:
When you couple Austin's quality manufacturing and drive to improve home air filtration with the research done by John Hopkins University Medical School and the approval of the National Sleep Foundation, you can be sure the result is favorable! The Austin Air Bedroom Machine air purifier is an excellent choice for someone whose priority is to sleep in a bedroom free of any allergens, chemicals, gases or odors and prefers some white noise to enhance their sleeping environment. It would be a good safe choice for someone who suffers from allergies, asthma, MCS or other respiratory issues.Technical Specifications of Austin Air Bedroom Machine Air Purifier
