Pluses:
The Titan comes standard with Miele's active HEPA filter which is phenomenal at capturing dust and other tiny particles to make sure only clean air is exhausted back into the room. Our testing showed the HEPA exhaust filter captured 100% of particles 0.3 microns and larger.
Though not a certified sealed system, the Titan's Exclusive CleanAir System has been thoroughly researched, developed and tested by Miele's quality control laboratories to ensure it effectively captures and retains dust, dirt and other indoor air pollutants, guaranteeing it is one of the most effective and hygienic methods of removing particulate matter from the home.
Its 6 suction speed settings paired with a power brush, floor brush and accessory tools provide everything you need for cleaning low- medium pile carpets, bare floors and upholstery.
Very low noise output for a pleasurable vacuuming experience. The S2's feature a new sound insulation layer that makes them particularly quiet especially when used on the silence setting.
The Titan is a mid-size canister vacuum with a lightweight design weighing only 11 lbs, so it is easily maneuvered and carried up or down stairs.
Miele vacuums are the easiest to assemble, changing the floor tool, putting on an accessory tool, removing the wand, etc. thanks to quick release buttons and snap-into-place construction.
The mid-size power brush (SEB 217-3) has a compact design that is lighter and less bulky than the full-size power brush (SEB 228 or SEB 236) and is better suited for smaller homes that have low-medium pile or cut pile carpets. However, it does not have height adjustments so is not ideal for thick, high pile carpets. It also does not have a headlight and will not park on its own.
The Parquet floor brush has two soft rollers for an easy gliding action and genuine horsehair bristles that sweep gently over the floor surface, brushing dust particles out of cracks.
We love the large 4.76 qt. (approx. 1 gallon) AirClean dust bags because they hold so much and do not need to be replaced until they are truly stuffed full. They are some of the best quality bags we have tested. They are 9 layers thick for filtration quality and durability, have excellent air flow for efficient use, and spring-loaded self-sealing covers for no-mess disposal.
The handy dust bag change indicator tells you when the bag is full and needs to be replaced, eliminating guessing games and loss of suction due to an overly full bag.
The Titan is an excellent value for the price. It lacks some of the luxury features and added construction perks found on the S4 and S5 models, but it retains the quality, performance, durability and integrity you expect from a Miele.
Minuses:
The Titan is not a certified sealed system like the S4 and S5 series canister vacuums. Though it does not add particles to the air in the room, it does not reduce the particle count of the room as is the case with Miele's certified sealed system vacuum cleaners.
Integrated PVC bumper guards are not included on the Titan, so be careful as you zoom around corners and furniture.
The mid-size power brush 217 is not as powerful or as easy to maneuver as Miele's full-size power brushes. Unfortunately, a full-size power brush option is not available with this vacuum.
The Titan does not have integrated accessory tool storage. The tools are kept onboard using a clip-on tool caddy which we found to occasionally get in the way and the tools are more likely to fall off and get lost then when they are kept under the hood.
Miele's crevice tool is not as long as we would have liked. It only offers a 4" reach where some competitors offer a full size 8" crevice tool.
Miele's dusting brush has the industry standard round design which we have found clogs easily when used on high suction because the bristles are sucked inwards. A triangular dusting brush proves to be a more efficient design because it does not become clogged by its bristles.
Summary:
The S2181 Titan is an absolutely fantastic deal for a Miele vacuum cleaner that comes standard with a power brush, smooth floor brush and HEPA filter. The Titan uses the same HEPA exhaust filter as Miele's other canister vacuums and through it is not a certified sealed system, zero particles are exhausted through the filter and the air quality in your home stays fresh and clean. The Titan is packaged with Miele's mid size power brush and basic smooth floor tool which makes it best suited for homes with low to medium pile carpeting, area rugs and smooth flooring. Though the Titan is more affordable, it does not lack in durability or quality, and it is designed to last an average of 20 years!
Through quality engineering Miele has cut costs on the S2 canister vacuum cleaners by streamlining the design to use less parts (NOT less quality parts) and leaving out unnecessary extras and luxury features. We have no doubt in our mind that you will be extremely happy with your new S2181 Titan vacuum cleaner purchase!
