HEGA - High Efficiency Gas Adsorption Technology Explained:
Most people have heard of HEPA filtration which is HIGH EFFICIENCY PARTICULATE ARRESTANCE filtration (good for small particles such as dust, dander, pollen, mold, smoke, etc.). The HEGA filter is a carbon filter that is used instead of granular carbon. Chemical molecules are often attached to particles which are longer than the gas molecules. The particles can and do plug up activated carbon pre-maturely reducing the life of the carbon dramatically. Activated carbon is very soft and air passing over it breaks off microscopic pieces which you don't want in the air. For this reason air is passed over carbon first and HEPA second. This eventually leads to gas molecules getting trapped in the HEPA and emitting odors.
The carbon cloth does not create dust. For this reason, it is safe to reverse Austin Air's standard filtration system for the Allergy Machine HEGA air purifiers is to filter the air over the HEPA first and the carbon second. There are several benefits to this. In this reversed filter process, the particles are stripped off the chemical molecules as they pass through the HEPA. This allows the carbon cloth to adsorb the contaminants without getting plugged up with particles. It also lets the carbon cloth adsorb more gas for improved reduction. If the gas does get stuck on the HEPA, the odors can still be captured on the carbon cloth.

By placing the true medical grade HEPA filter before the activated military carbon cloth, the Allergy Machine’s focus is on removing airborne particles first, then gaseous contaminant reduction before they cause irritation and trigger asthma or allergies symptoms.
Pluses:
- Simple in design with a focus on comprehensive filtration. This Austin Air purifier’s HEGA filtration design is good for smoke and odor removal because the last stage of filtration is an activated carbon cloth that is the same quality as those used by the military and hospitals. The carbon cloth does not produce dust, therefore making it efficient for the air to pass through the HEPA filter first, capturing the particles and allowing the carbon cloth to absorb more gaseous particles because it is not getting plugged up with particles.
- Long lasting filters and minimal maintenance. We were initially impressed that the only maintenance required was to replacing the filter every 5 years and periodically vacuum the large pre-filter from outside the unit. After quite a few years of personal experience with the Austin Air air purifiers, we can report that when running them constantly 24/7, a more realistic life expectancy for the filter is 2 to 4 years, with the carbon becoming saturated before the HEPA filter. None the less, the filter is supported by a 5 year prorated guarantee.
- The Austin Air Allergy Machine HEGA air purifiers have a superior steel construction with a baked-on powder coat finish. This makes it a good, safe choice to for those sensitive to plastic off-gassing.
- Austin Air’s reputation is excellent and they have been in business for many years and stand behind their product with a 5 year warranty on parts and labor. They are also one of the only manufacturer’s to offer a 5 year pro-rated guarantee on their filters!
- The Austin Air Allergy Machine HEGA air purifiers are a great value choice offering high efficiency, comprehensive air filtration with low maintenance and costs. It’s a small price to pay to enjoy clean indoor air and avoid an allergy or asthma attack.
Minuses:
- Not our quietest air purifier. Our testing team found the Austin Air Allergy Machine HEGA air purifiers to be noisy on the high and medium speed, but agreed the low speed is quiet enough for sleeping depending on your noise sensitivity. High speed is best suited for quick cleaning or for use when you are not in the room. The medium speed is okay if there is already some background noise. The low speed is quiet enough to use while sleeping.
- No filter change indicator. If there is anything we would like Austin Air to change, it would be the addition of some type of filter monitoring device to remove the guesswork out of when one should replace the filter. Currently the only way to tell the carbon needs to be replaced is when one can start to smell it, as once it is saturated it will start to off-gas odors.
- Replacing the filters is not a 60 second job. In order to access the filters, the air purifier must be turned upside down and the bottom plate removed. The bottom plate is attached by 4 screws so a screw driver is required to change the filters.
- Austin Air overstates the room coverage of the Allergy Machine HEGA air purifier at up to 1500 sq. ft. Actual maximum room coverage for the Austin Air Allergy Machine HEGA air purifier is more like 313 sq. ft. while running on high fan speed in order to achieve 6 air changes per hour. Room coverage is half as much when running on medium speed. The Allergy Machine HEGA Junior air purifier’s actual room coverage is about 156 sq. ft. while on high speed to achieve 6 air changes per hour.
