Pluses:
- Cute design
- Easy to use with large power button and auto shut off at the end of sanitizing cycle
- Fun to use and strategically weighted so it will not tip over
- Does not take up a lot of counter top space
- Fits all types of toothbrushes because only the head and neck fits in the holder. Will fit thick handled and electric toothbrushes.
- 1 inch UVC bulb kills germs on the bristles of your toothbrush
- Small enough to travel with – would be a great product to send off to college with your child
Minuses:
- If your toothbrush head is larger than 1 inch in length not all of the bristles will have direct contact with the UVC light and it will not get completely sanitized
- Toothbrushes with large heads and long bristles will have to be pushed through the narrow opening
- Somewhat difficult to clean the inner area where your toothbrush head sits – luckily the Zapi comes apart and puts back together easily
- Does not have any drainage so water drip-off gathers inside the holder
- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries which are not included (Battery life will correlate with the type of batteries used. I suggest using rechargeable batteries to keep costs down)
Summary:
I was not sure how the Zapi was going to perform after reading a number of reviews on the internet both good and bad. So far my experience with the Zapi has been good. I will admit the product has its minuses, but overall it is a nice little gadget and is not overly expensive. I enjoy the way it looks on my sink counter top and it does not take up very much room. Also, when accidentally bumped, the Zapi does not fall over throwing my toothbrush on the floor – which usually means time for a new toothbrush. I couldn't help but think how many toothbrushes this would have saved if I had had it in college! (Not to mention the number of colds its germ killing ability may have prevented). The biggest down falls to the Zapi is that standard batteries do not last long and if you tend to put your toothbrush away with out thoroughly shaking it off, the Zapi will fill up with toothbrush run-off which is counter-productive when the purpose of the gadget is to sanitize your brush. On the plus side, I found it easy to take apart which aided in cleaning. I use q-tips to clean the inside holder which seem to work well. UVC light's germ-killing technology is proven but it is hard to tell if the Zapi is really killing the germs on your toothbrush since the average person does not have the special equipment to check for germs. But I assume the lack of getting sick and a good smelling toothbrush means its working. Overall, I found this product effective but it does require some extra attention. Here are a couple helpful hints for using the Zapi: remember to use new or fully-charged batteries for optimal lifespan and clean often to keep the unit from becoming drenched in water which will affect its performance or make it stop working.
