This is the newest design of many generations of dawn simulator sunrise alarm clocks and so far it is one of our favorites. Its design is more compact than previous Verilux models and its functions have been improved and unnecessary features removed to make it easier to operate and offer a more affordable price.

Pluses:

The lamps slowly increasing brightness and gentle increase in sound volume slowly stirs you awake over the course of 15 minutes. At your scheduled alarm time, the lamp will be at full brightness and sound will be at its highest volume. Both the maximum brightness and volume for the alarm is pre-selected by the user when you set the alarm. For example, I wake to a brightness of 10 and a sound volume of 5 (both variables have a scale of 1-20)
Optional sleep cycle lets you fall asleep to a simulated sunset over the course of 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes which is great for those who need help relaxing.
FM radio can be used on its own or programmed to use as the alarm. This is a nice option if you have a favorite radio station or morning show you like to wake up to.
Uses a standard 60 watt bulb which makes replacing easy and convenient.
Multiple choices for setting the alarm - choose light brightness, sound and sound level, and it even gives the option to set a second or back up alarm if needed. This also allows the lamp to be used by two people!
Adjustable brightness display lets you find the setting that you like best or shut it off if you are bothered by light.
Helps reset circadian rhythm and improve sleep cycles naturally.

Minuses:

Setting the time and alarm functions can be tricky to figure out on your own. We highly recommend using the instruction manual.
The design is not that attractive or stylized, and may look a bit awkward on your night stand.

Summary:

This sunrise alarm lamp is a dream come true for those who hate the disruptive, harsh sounds of a blaring alarm clock. The gradual brightening of the light combined with the gentle increase of your selected sound creates a stress-free, more enjoyable morning. Having the room bright when you open your eyes definitely makes the process of getting out of a warm bed easier and the soft chirping of birds (my sound choice) mixed with a sound therapy background gives a feeling of peace and happiness. This lamp is fully programmable allowing you to customize everything from the brightness of the display panel, to how bright the sunrise and how loud the sound, to the duration of the sleep and snooze cycles.

I am a light sleeper and this light gently wakes me minutes before my actual alarm time. I actually had to set my alarm for a few minutes later than normal because I am sensitive to light and tend to wake up within the first 5 minutes of the sunrise. Those who are not affected by light can rely on the nature sounds or fm radio to wake them, and for those who are very heavy sleepers or tend to hit snooze too many times, you can set a second alarm. The second alarm can also be used if the alarm is to wake two people at different times. The other nice thing about this alarm lamp is when you set the sunrise and sound you get to choose how loud and how bright it gets when it finally hits your set wake up time. Both brightness and sound volume can be set on a level from 1 to 20.

The initial programming of the light can be difficult to figure out on your own. I highly recommend referring to the user manual when first programming the wake up lamp to eliminate confusion and frustration. When referring to the manual you can get it programmed in less than 5 minutes.

A nice improvement to this new version of the Rise & Shine lamp is the option to turn off the backlit display, which is great for those who like complete darkness when trying to fall asleep. The backlight on the display can be set to bright, dim, or off. I use it on dim which produces a nice glow but is not obnoxiously bright. Children who like a nightlight would like this display on bright.

Despite its new design, the Rise & Shine lamps from Verilux have never been very stylish and this one is no exception. However, it functions very well and if you can get over the fact it may not fit you décor, we can guarantee you will be happy with its performance. Also, here is one Verilux product that does not require a specific, expensive replacement bulb. The Rise & Shine Wake-up Light can be used with any standard incandescent 60 watt bulb which makes replacing it very easy and convenient. The downside to an average incandescent bulb is it will not provide Natural Spectrum light, which is ideal for reading and depicting true colors, and it will not last as long as a CFL or LED. This lamp will accommodate special bulbs as long as they are equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent bulb and are dimmable.
