The Verilux Happy Light 6000 came out as a replacement for the Happy Light Mini and is more powerful delivering 6000 LUX instead of 5000 LUX. They share the same basic design but the base color is now white instead of silver.
Pluses:
Does not take up much desk space
Easy to use
Bright, crisp light
A huge relief during the dark days of winter
Helps you feel awake and energized during dreary, dark days
Helps improve mood – everyday feels like a sunny day
Portable for use at office and at home
Great light for reading, desk work, and other tasks that require good lighting
Bulb lasts for 2 to 3 years before needing to be replaced
Minuses:
Design is not overly stylish
Slightly pricy but more affordable then a full-size light box
You need to be able to get up to 4 hrs of light exposure and before 5pm in order to treat symptoms of winter blues or S.A.D.
Light is very bright and may not be good for those sensitive to bright lights (however with proper placement of light it should be tolerable for most users)
Summary:
I decided to test the Verilux Happy Light 6000 at the end of fall and start of winter when sunny days are few and far between. Typically on dark, cold days it is very hard for me to stay awake and feel energized while at my desk or reading. All I think about is how I would be so much happier if I was sleeping all cozy, cuddled up with my warm comforter. Seeing how that is not an option Monday-Friday, I turned to this light for help. When I got to my office desk in the morning, I immediately turned on the bright (yes it is very bright) light and positioned it at a good angle and distance that worked for me. (Just a side note, this can take a day or so figure out what works best for you.) Now, let me just say, on my first day of using this light I was quite pleasantly surprised when I realized it was almost noon and I had not needed to refill my coffee or get up and walk around to regain energy and focus! From that day on, this light is my new morning-buddy during the fall and winter months, and I even use it all year round for those rainy New England days. Keep in mind, this may not be right for everyone, but I strongly feel it's definitely worth a try if you suffer from lack of energy and general feeling of blah-ness on those dark, long days of winter. I love the way it helps keep me awake and focused while I sit at my desk in the winter surrounded by a grey, cold-looking sky. It's also very portable so it comes with me from the office to my home and I have found it very helpful for reading. The natural spectrum light is great for improving black and white contrast and depicting true colors. Ladies, this is also great light for doing make-up!
