Pluses:
Sealed HEPA filtration helps keep your indoor air fresh and clean, trapping dust and dirt inside the vacuum bag and filters.
Its small and lightweight design makes it easy to use, carry store in a closet. You can also easily remove the hose from the canister and store it on a closet shelf.
It has a carry strap that can be used to assist in carrying the vacuum making it super easy to clean stairs.
This vacuum weighs just 10 lbs and despite its small size, it even has tools on board, which is a major accomplishment in a vacuum cleaner so small.
The vacuum is easy to maneuver around the house with 360° swivel hose at both canister and handle, large rear wheels and a large cleaning radius.
Metal telescopic wand adds durability and allows the user to adjust the wand length to comfortably accommodate their height and reach high into the ceiling corners.
The 1400 watt motor delivers good suction power to the floor tool to grab up dust bunnies and dirt that is on the floor surface.
Includes a crevice tool, upholstery tool, and dusting brush which are stored neatly onboard at the back of the canister. We found the accessory tools to be easy to change on the fly and were of good quality for this price level vacuum cleaner.
Optional turbo brush package includes the combination floor tool and a turbo brush with an air powered brush roll to provide more effective cleaning of area rugs and low pile carpets. A bare floor brush with natural horse hair bristles is also available as an add-on for those who have highly polished hard wood floors or delicate tile.
Minuses:
No suction adjustment makes it less efficient at accommodating lightweight rugs and curtains. There is an air release valve at the handle but its effect is minimal.
The vacuum seemed noisy for such a small canister. We had tested larger vacuums that are quieter, but than again this does not have the option to turn down the suction and the motor does provide 1400 watts of power.
The combination floor tool works ok but is not very effective at cleaning carpet pile because it does not have a brush roll for agitation. It will however pick up surface dirt and lint. Purchase the turbo brush package if you have large area rugs or carpeted rooms. Neither tool is recommended for medium to high pile carpet or rugs.
No automatic cord rewind. You must wind the power cord around the hooks on the bottom side of the vacuum.
No indicator lights to tell when bag is full or filter needs to be replaced. You should check the bag and filter before you start vacuuming to make sure they are in working condition. Vacuuming on an overly full bag will reduce suction power.
All plastic wheels are less durable and do not have a rubber coating like most higher end vacuum cleaners.
Summary:
For the price, the SC3683 is a good compact vacuum for allergy sufferers and is ideal for small apartments and dorm rooms. It has a good quality HEPA exhaust filter and uses good quality vacuum bags that are a decent size, 2.6 quarts or approx. ½ gallon dry capacity. It is very easy and straight forward to use, just plug it in and turn it on. The floor tools and accessory tools slide on and off with out hassle and the telescopic wand offers a nice range of height adjustment. It surprisingly has a very large operating radius with a 20 ft power cord, 7 foot hose and adjustable telescopic wand. Its small size, carry handle, large rear wheels, front swivel wheel and swivel hose makes it easy to maneuver in smaller spaces and requires minimal storage space. Its lightness and size also makes it a good choice for the elderly.
Keep in mind that you do get what you pay for and this vacuum does not have the cleaning capacity of many of our other vacuum cleaners. However, if you pair it with the turbo head option the performance of this vacuum is improved quite dramatically and will keep your bare floors and low pile area rugs clean and free of dirt and lint. If you have highly polished wood floors you can also purchase the Electrolux bare floor brush with natural bristles to gently sweep and remove dust and dirt. Despite the vacuum's short falls, for those on a tight budget this little vacuum will help keep your floors and furniture clean and maintain a healthy living environment as it does not spew dirt and dust back into the room as you vacuum.
