While some dotcoms may be under pressure to produce profits for shareholders and investors, privately held AllergyBuyersClub.com
of Newton, MA reported its December 2002 sales were up two-fold over 2001 with an increase of 265% for the year over
all with gross sales of $5.3 million.
Spokesperson for the company, Mercia Tapping CEO and founder, noted that there was a noticeable shift away from high-end
goods to "just the basics". " Instead of luxury, hypoallergenic comforters, we were selling hundreds of humidifiers
and air purifiers. You would also be surprised at how many men still give a vacuum cleaner to their wives for Christmas!" said
Tapping.
Tapping also noted that the per head spending was down by 35% from Christmas 2001 but the company's aggressive marketing
efforts had increased the volume of visitors to the site. The unique visitor count in the month of December 2002 surged
to 400,000 and shows no sign of pulling back in January 2003.
AllergyBuyersClub.com is a Web based company selling healthy home products with a customer focus on allergy and sinus
sufferers. Founded in 1998, it is privately held and has bootstrapped its way to profitability for the second year in
a row. The company gave Christmas 2002 bonuses to its employees and is optimistic about the company's growth potential
