The Miele Capricorn is the "cream of the crop" for canister vacuum cleaners. It is a top of the line luxury vacuum cleaner that has all the features you desire, plus some. If you want nothing but the best, than look no further. This vacuum is easy to use requiring little user effort, has by far the most superior filtration system, is super quiet, and cleans like a champion.
Pluses:
The fingertip controls for suction speed, power on/off, and brush roll on/off are easy to use and conveniently located on the deluxe handle for effortless operation. The LED indicator below the controls makes it easy to know what suction speed you are on.
Miele's built-in silence insulation makes the Capricorn one of our quietest vacuum cleaners on all speeds.
The Capricorn’s Active HEPA Filter and sealed system construction truly provides excellent air quality by trapping dust and other particles inside the vacuum cleaner. Our testing showed it exhausts 0 particles back into the room!
We love the large 4.76 qt. (approx. 1 gallon) AirClean dust bags because they hold so much and do not need to be replaced until they are truly stuffed full. They are some of the best quality bags we have tested. They are 9 layers thick for filtration quality and durability, have excellent air flow for efficient use, and spring-loaded self-sealing covers for no-mess disposal.
It is beyond easy to maintain with dust bag and filter change indicators to tell when it is time to replace a full bag or change a dirty filter. These indicators help keep the vacuum operating at tip-top performance and efficiency.
Miele vacuums are the easiest to assemble, changing the floor tool, putting on an accessory tool, removing the wand, etc. thanks to quick release buttons and snap-into-place construction.
The full-size 236 power brush is not only a superior power brush for cleaning all types of carpets with 5 height adjustments and a headlight, but it also parks on its own and will automatically power-off the vacuum when parked. Please note that the smaller 217 power brush does not park on its own and does not have auto-shut off feature.
The Parquet Twister floor brush has an improved swivel design which is most helpful when cleaning hard to reach areas like under the bed. The Parquet Floor Brush has been redesigned with shorter natural bristles and spaces between the bristle sections to provide for maximum suction and longer life.
The Capricorn is a mid-size canister vacuum with a lightweight design weighing 13.5 lbs, so it is still easily maneuvered and carried up or down stairs.
Miele has satisfied our desire for looks and protection, by outfitting the Capricorn with an attractive midnight purple color with a pearl finish and integrating rubber PVC bumpers along the front, back and sides.
Minuses:
Miele's crevice tool is not as long as we would have liked. It only offers a 4" reach where some competitors offer a full size 8" crevice tool.
Miele's dusting brush has the industry standard round design which we have found clogs easily when used on high suction because the bristles are sucked inwards leaving little room for dust and dirt pass through. A triangular dusting brush proves to be a more efficient design because it does not become clogged by its bristles.
The Capricorn is very expensive, however it is a premium vacuum cleaner with all the bells and whistles, and with Miele's quality manufacturing you can be sure it will last for years.
Summary:
As Miele's top-of-the-line luxury vacuum, the Capricorn is packed with convenient features for hassle-free vacuuming. We really love how you can control everything right at your fingertips. Not to mention, how easy it is to assemble the vacuum, exchange out the floor tools and use the accessories tools. The LED speed indicator on the handle is a unique feature we find to be a nice plus, especially when you are in darker areas and want to adjust your suction. As with all the Miele S5’s, the Capricorn exhibits the quality design expected from Miele, with an Active HEPA filter, large 4.76 qt. filtering dust bags, dust bag change indicator, filter change indicator, sealed system design, silence insulation, integrated rubber PVC bumpers guards, and the ability to fit with multiple floor tools and accessories. It comes with a choice of power brush, however we strongly suggest the full-size 236 power brush, not only for its extra features, but because it actually is easier to use and does a much better job deep cleaning carpets of all variety. And for your bare floors, you can't find a more efficient floor brush than the parquet twister. We found it did a fantastic job maneuvering around furniture and gently cleaning delicate smooth flooring such as tile and highly polished hard wood. The onboard accessory tools are conveniently stored under the vacuum hood. They are well-made, good quality tools, however we would have liked the crevice tool to be longer and the dust brush to be less prone to clogging. The nice thing about Miele is they offer a fantastic variety of other accessory tools that can be purchased separately, which include a 22" flexible crevice tool and a universal dusting brush with a swivel neck and triangular design to avoid clogging. All-in-all, the Capricorn proves to be a 5-star "excellent" canister vacuum that can tackle any job. If you splurge and spend the extra money, we're sure you will not be disappointed!
