The S5 Leo is packaged to fit your household cleaning needs with choice of mid-size (SEB 217-3) or full-size (SEB 236) power brush and deluxe parquet floor brush. Pluses:
The Leo's active HEPA filter and sealed system construction truly provides excellent air quality by trapping dust and other particles inside the vacuum cleaner. Our testing showed it exhausts 0 particles back into the room!
Its 6 suction speed settings are easily adjusted on the canister using (+) or (–) push button controls and have indicator lights to show what setting you are on. Not as convenient as fingertip or automatic suction control, but a very nice set up that is easy to use.
The Leo is a mid-size canister vacuum with a lightweight design weighing 13.5 lbs, so it is still easily maneuvered and carried up or down stairs.
Miele's built-in silence insulation makes the Leo one of our quietest vacuum cleaners on all speeds.
Miele vacuums are the easiest to assemble, changing the floor tool, putting on an accessory tool, removing the wand, etc. thanks to quick release buttons and snap-into-place construction.
The full-size 236 power brush is not only a superior power brush for cleaning all types of carpets with 5 height adjustments and a headlight, but it also parks on its own and will automatically power-off the whole vacuum when parked. The 217 power brush does not park on its own and does not have auto-shut off feature.
The Parquet Twister floor brush has an improved swivel design which is most helpful when cleaning in hard to reach areas like under the bed. The Parquet Floor Brush has been redesigned with shorter natural bristles and spaces between the bristle sections to provide for maximum suction and longer life.
We love the large 4.76 qt. (approx. 1 gallon) AirClean dust bags because they hold so much and do not need to be replaced until they are truly stuffed full. They are some of the best quality bags we have tested. They are 9 layers thick for filtration quality and durability, have excellent air flow for efficient use and spring-loaded self-sealing covers for no-mess disposal.
Beyond easy to maintain with dust bag and filter change indicators to tell you when it is time to replace a full bag or change a dirty filter to keep it operating at tip-top performance and efficiency.
The Leo's integrated rubber PVC bumper guards protect your walls and furniture from marks and dings.
The Leo lets you choose between a mid size and full size power brush so you can be sure to get the vacuum package that fits your floor cleaning needs and your price range.
Minuses:
The Leo does not have fingertip suction control as found on the top-of the-line S5981 Capricorn. The Leo's suction controls are located on the canister.
Miele's crevice tool is not as long as we would have liked. It only offers a 4" reach where some competitors offer a full size 8" crevice tool. (However, the Extended Flexible Crevice tool offering 22 inches of flexible length is an available option.)
Miele's dusting brush has the industry standard round design which we have found clogs easily when used on high suction because the bristles are sucked inwards. A triangular dusting brush proves to be a more efficient design because it does not become clogged by its bristles. (However, the Universal Brush tool with its 2 swivel joints for 360 degree rotation is an available option.)
Summary:
The S5381 Leo is a superior vacuum cleaner that lets you choose which power brush is best suited for your home cleaning needs and gives you a price range. We highly recommend the 236 full size power brush over the 217 mid size power brush because it maneuvers easier over all carpet types and offers 5 height adjustments, a headlight, and automatically powers off the vacuum when parked. The only time we would recommend the 217 over the 236 power brush is if you have a smaller-size home and have low to medium pile carpet, or if your budget requires a lower price point. Despite which power brush you choose, the Leo is easy to use, packed with deluxe features such as +/- electronic controls with LED indicators and bag and filter change indicators. It is safe for allergy sufferers with sealed system construction, active HEPA filter and unbelievable dust bags that feature 9-layers of electrostatic filter media and spring-loaded self sealing covers. The Leo's quiet operation is a feature that all parents and pet owners will cherish, as they can vacuum when the kids are sleeping and do not have to worry about driving their pets into a wild frenzy. In summary, the Leo offers all the convenience of the top-of-the-line, luxury Miele Capricorn minus finger tip +/- suction controls. If you are willing to give up that feature to save some money, then this is a fantastic vacuum choice. Plus, who wouldn't enjoy using a cheery yellow vacuum?
