The S5281 Pisces may be the entry level model of S5 series but you would never know it other than the lack of some luxury features. It has the same great HEPA sealed system construction and powerful suction as the rest of the line. It is equipped with a turbo brush for cleaning area rugs or cut pile carpets, a parquet floor brush for hard wood or tiled floors and 3 integrated onboard accessory tools for your above floor cleaning needs.
Pluses:
The Pisces's active HEPA filter and sealed system construction truly provides excellent air quality by trapping dust and other particles inside the vacuum cleaner. Our testing showed it exhausts 0 particles back into the room!
Its 6 suction speed settings paired with an air driven turbo brush, bare floor brush and accessory tools provides the versatility needed to clean everything from your large area rugs, to small bathroom rugs, hard wood floors and curtains.
Miele's built-in silence insulation makes the Pisces one of our quietest vacuum cleaners on all speeds. The turbo brush also adds very little noise since it is powered by air and not an additional motor.
The Pisces is a mid-size canister vacuum with a lightweight design weighing 13.5 lbs, so it is still easily maneuvered and carried up or down stairs. The turbo head is also lighter than a power brush.
Miele vacuums are the easiest to assemble, changing the floor tool, putting on an accessory tool, removing the wand, etc. thanks to quick release buttons and snap-into-place construction.
The air driven turbo brush is more gentle on carpets and rugs than a motorized power brush. It offers brush roll agitation powered by the air flow of the vacuum to help lift dirt for a clean finish. This tool works best on cut pile carpets or rugs and does a better job at removing dirt and hair than a combination Carpet/Floor tool.
The Parquet Twister floor brush has an improved swivel design which is most helpful when cleaning in hard to reach areas like under the bed. The Parquet Floor Brush has been redesigned with shorter natural bristles and spaces between the bristle sections to provide for maximum suction and longer life.
We love the large 4.76 qt. (approx. 1 gallon) AirClean dust bags because they hold so much and do not need to be replaced until they are truly stuffed full. They are some of the best quality bags we have tested. They are 9 layers thick for filtration quality and durability, have excellent air flow for efficient use, and spring-loaded self-sealing covers for no-mess disposal.
The handy dust bag change indicator tells you when the bag is full and needs to be replaced, eliminating guessing games and loss of suction due to an overly full bag.
The Pisces's integrated rubber PVC bumper guards protect your walls and furniture from marks and dings.
Its large 33 ft cleaning radius allows plenty of room to clean before needing to move to a new power outlet.
German made for quality and durability, this vacuum is designed to last for 20 years!
Miele offers a generous warranty that covers the vacuum motor for up to 7 years; parts and labor are covered for 1 year.
Minuses:
The only carpet tool that works with the Pisces is the Turbo brush. If you have wall to wall or thick, medium to high pile carpets this is not the vacuum for you. The Turbo brush is powered by air flow and does not provide the deep cleaning and brush roll agitation of an electric power brush.
The lack of a direct connect wand and electric hose prevents the Pisces from being upgraded to accommodate one of Miele's electric power brushes.
The Pisces is not one of the luxury S5 models, so it lacks special features like +/- push button suction controls, a deluxe handle and a filter change indicator. The Pisces has a manual rotary dial suction control which is located on the canister.
Miele's crevice tool is not as long as we would have liked. It only offers a 4" reach where some competitors offer a full size 8" crevice tool.
Miele's dusting brush has the industry standard round design which we have found clogs easily when used on high suction because the bristles are sucked inwards. A triangular dusting brush proves to be a more efficient design because it does not become clogged by its bristles.
Summary:
The Pisces may be the entry level model of the S5 series, but it still earned its 4.5-star rating. Despite the lack of luxury features such as +/- finger tip suction controls, filter change indicator, a deluxe handle and direct connect wand with an electrical hose, the Pisces still stands strong boasting Miele's unbeatable construction and 6 stage suction power. Like all the S5 models, the Pisces provides its users with certified sealed system construction, active HEPA filtration, large and very efficient dust bags, dust bag change indicator, silence insulation, integrated bumper guards and 3 accessory tools stored under the hood.
The Pisces represents a very good value for the price, packaged with a turbo brush, bare floor tool and 3 accessory tools. Though the turbo brush does not have the deep and restorative carpet cleaning power of a motorized power brush, it offers very good performance and effectiveness on low to medium cut pile. A canister vacuum with a turbo brush instead of a power brush is a great alternative choice for someone who does not necessarily need a power brush and would like to save a few extra dollars. We feel the Pisces is the perfect vacuum cleaning package for households with a mix of bare floors and cut pile carpets or low to medium pile area rugs.
Equipped with 4 thread catchers and a flexible suction opening, which adapts to various pile depths, the Extra Wide Upholstery Tool offers fast and thorough cleaning of upholstery and mattresses.
