The Miele S4212 Neptune canister vacuum cleaner is one of the entry-level vacuums of the S4 Galaxy Series offering Super Air Clean filtration, sealed system construction, manual dial suction control, 3 onboard accessory tools, parquet floor brush and turbo brush for a mix of bare floors and low-medium cut pile carpet or rugs.
Pluses:
Respectable filtration and sealed system construction maintains healthy indoor air quality. The Super Air Clean filter is easy to change and is electro-statically charged to retain a majority of dust particles. If you want the best filtration, the active HEPA filter can be purchased separately.
Just as powerful as their larger siblings, the compact S4 canisters have the same 1200 watt motor and 6 suction speeds which make it possible to clean thick carpets as well as small rugs and curtains.
The Neptune has built-in silence insulation for ultra quiet vacuuming.
The Neptune is a compact canister vacuum weighing only 10.5 lbs. We cannot stress enough how easy the S4 vacuums are to maneuver, carry and store away in a closet. For those of you with multi-level homes, this is a perfect vacuum.
Miele vacuums are the easiest to assemble, changing the floor tool, putting on an accessory tool, removing the wand, etc. thanks to quick release buttons and snap-into-place construction.
The Parquet Twister floor brush has an improved swivel design which is most helpful when cleaning in hard to reach areas like under the bed. The Parquet Floor Brush has been redesigned with shorter natural bristles and spaces between the bristle sections to provide for maximum suction and longer life.
The turbo brush is a lightweight, easily maneuverable carpet tool that is more gentle on carpets and rugs than a motorized power brush. It offers brush roll agitation powered by the air flow of the vacuum to help lift dirt and lint. This tool works very well on cut pile carpets and rugs, and does a better job at removing dirt and hair than a combination Carpet/Floor tool.
Though the bags hold just under a gallon (3.7 qt capacity), they are larger and last a lot longer than the bags of comparable compact size vacuums and they keep working until they are truly stuffed full. Miele's AirClean filtering vacuum bags are some of the best quality bags we have tested. They are 9 layers thick for filtration quality and durability, have excellent air flow for efficient use, and spring-loaded self-sealing covers for no-mess disposal.
The handy dust bag change indicator tells you when the bag is full and needs to be replaced, eliminating guessing games and loss of suction due to an overly full bag.
Its 29.5 ft cleaning radius allows plenty of room to move around before needing to change power outlets.
German made for quality and durability, this vacuum is designed to last for 20 years!
Miele offers a generous warranty on the Neptune that covers the motor for up to 7 years.
Minuses:
The Neptune is not a luxury model, so it lacks special features like a deluxe ergonomic handle, electronic suction controls and a filter change indicator. The Neptune has a manual rotary dial suction control which is located on the canister.
The S4 canisters do not have integrated bumper guards like the S5 canisters, so use caution as you maneuver around corners and furniture.
The turbo brush is not as effective at cleaning medium to high pile carpets and rugs as a power brush. If you have lots of carpet or thick plush rugs and want a more powerful carpet tool we suggest looking at a Miele S5 canister vacuum with a power brush.
Miele's crevice tool is not as long as we would have liked. It only offers a 4" reach where some competitors offer a full size 8" crevice tool.
Miele's dusting brush has the industry standard round design which we have found clogs easily when used on high suction because the bristles are sucked inwards. A triangular dusting brush proves to be a more efficient design because it does not become clogged by its bristles.
The Neptune stores its accessory tools on a Vario Clip. We are glad to have the tools onboard but find they are more apt to get in the way and get knocked off or lost when they are stored on a clip. We prefer when the tools have integrated spots onboard the vacuum canister.
Summary:
We love the portability, style and convenience of Miele‘s S4212 Neptune vacuum cleaner. It is very well constructed and is easy to use, carry and store. The Neptune has quickly become our most popular canister vacuum cleaner with a turbo brush and bare floor brush. It does not come standard with a HEPA filter but the Super Air Clean filter does a respectable job and paired with Miele's certified seal system construction, this vacuum keeps the air quality in your house near perfect. Plus, you can replace the Super Air Clean filter with an active HEPA filter to ensure 0 particles are exhausted from the vacuum.
The S4212 Neptune is the perfect vacuum combination for someone who has a home with mostly bare floors and a few carpeted rooms or large area rugs that are low to medium cut pile. A canister vacuum with a turbo brush instead of a power brush is a great alternative choice for someone who does not necessarily need a power brush and would like to save a few extra dollars. The Neptune provides a lot of top notch design features but without some of the added luxury features which gives it a very good value at a reasonable price. Not to mention, this vacuum is designed to last for 20 years!
