Care of:Dirt Cup:
Empty the dirt cup at the end of each cleaning session and before the dirt reaches the fill line.
Umbrella Tube:
Check the umbrella tube (located inside dirt cup) on a monthly basis and clean when it is wrapped with debris. Check more frequently if cleaning up pet hair or you have family members with long hair.
Lifetime Primary Filter: It is recommended that the Primary Filter (located on the canister behind the dirt cup) be checked and washed in cold water periodically depending on the frequency of use and volume of dirt being picked up on each cleaning. Make sure filter is completely dry before putting it back in vacuum.
HEPA Exhaust Filter: The HEPA filter is indented to be a lifetime filter. Inspect HEPA filter at the same time Primary filter is cleaned. Over time, it is normal for the HEPA filter to turn gray. If HEPA filter appears visibly dirty clean it by gently tapping it against the inside of a trash bin or vacuuming on lowest suction power to remove excess dust and debris.

Though we do not believe bagless vacuum cleaners are a best fit for allergy or asthma sufferers due to the dust that gathers around the dirt bin and the slew of particles that are expelled into the air as you empty it, we do understand that they offer a convenience and cost savings over a bagged vacuum. After passing our filtration tests, we feel the Hoover S3865 Platinum is a good choice for a bagless canister vacuum cleaner and it offers additional cost savings thanks to its cleanable lifetime filters.
Pluses:
During our testing the exhaust filter had a 99.6% efficiency at retaining dust and other particles within the vacuum cleaner. Its filtration combined with s tightly sealed design kept the particle count in the room from increasing, maintaining good indoor air quality.
We found the Hoover to be easy to operate with the power and brush roll on/off located at your finger tips.
It has a nice large handle that felt comfortable in our hands and was easy to control the power brush.
The hose swivels where it attaches to the handle to help keep the hose from kinking as you maneuver around the room.
Large rear wheels and a 360° swivel front wheel lets the canister move easily on both carpet and bare floors. The wheels are also rubber coated to protect your floors from scratches or marks.
This vacuum is very affordable to maintain as it requires no replacement bags or filters. The filters do need to be cleaned every now and then when they start to look dirty in order to maintain their effectiveness.
The power head lets you adjust for carpet height using the foot petal which we found more convenient then having to bend down and turn a dial.
We were impressed with the strong suction power of the vacuum and it did a very decent job at picking up dirt and pet hair from carpets and furniture.
We liked the quality of the bare floor brush which had natural horsehair bristles and nicely swept up dirt and crumbs from the cracks and corners.
The inclusion of the handheld turbo brush is a nice valued added feature. This tool is very helpful when cleaning couches, stairs or your car interior.
Great cleaning radius on this vacuum. It has a longer than average power cord that is 25ft long and an automatic cord rewind to keep it neatly stored.
We were happy to see Hoover gave this vacuum a long 6 year warranty which helps reassure doubts about the vacuum's durability.
Minuses:
The vacuum is heavy weighing in at 27 lbs and is bulky which makes it harder to carry up stairs or store in a closet.
The vacuum only has one suction speed which is very powerful and makes it hard to clean small lightweight rugs and curtains and not recommended for delicate natural fiber rugs. It does however have an air vent slide control that is suppose to adjust the suction power, but we found it makes a minimal difference in the suction power and is basically ineffective. The slide is also awkwardly located on the side of the handle and is not very easy to move.
We found the vacuum motor rather loud and noticed a high pitched sound. Furthermore, when the power brush was turned on it became noisier.
Emptying dust bin is a dirty process where dust and particles are let back into the air. We highly suggest emptying the bin outside of your house and if you suffer from allergies or asthma have someone else empty it for you, or wear a filtering face mask.
We are happy that the accessory tools are stored onboard under the handle, but are not overly impressed with the quality of the tools. The crevice nozzle is only about 4 inches long and the dusting brush does not have natural bristle.
Summary:
This vacuum is not for everyone, but if you like a canister vacuum and do not want to buy replacement bags, then this Hoover may be the perfect fit for you. It offers strong suction and comes with a full size power brush, natural bristle floor brush and a handheld turbo brush which should take care of all your household cleaning needs plus some.
The bare floor brush and power brush are of good quality and are easily maneuvered and exchanged on/off. The accessory tools are nothing special but they do get the job done and are kept onboard under the handle for easy access. The lack of a suction adjustment control that will actually reduce the suction speed makes it difficult to clean small, lightweight rugs, curtains and other items that require low suction power. The single operating speed also keeps the vacuum at a steady noise level, and though it is not alarming loud, it is not quiet either.
Overall we found this vacuum easy to use with simple finger tip power controls and a foot pedal to adjust the carpet height on the power brush. We were pleasantly surprised by its filtration performance which did not expel particles back into the room, keeping the indoor air clean and fresh. We do feel the canister is a bit bulky and heavy to pull around or carry, but it does have a very nice long power cord which gives it a very good operating radius. Emptying the dust bin is fairly easy and only takes a minute or two, but it's a dirty job and should be done outside, down from the wind, and not by someone with a sensitive respiratory system. None the less, if you are in the market for a bagless canister vacuum you are probably aware that emptying a dust bin is never a fun job, and if you do not want replacement bags and filters to be part of your vacuuming future you should be pleased with the Hoover S3865 Platinum bagless canister vacuum cleaner.
