Description of Gruene Handheld Steam Cleaner and Mop

Sanitizing the floors, countertops, bathrooms, sinks, clothes, mattresses and kitchen areas often required multiple chemical-based cleaners to successfully do the job. The Gruene Handheld Steam Cleaner and Mop solves this problem with its unusual ability to convert from a steam mop to a handheld steam cleaner. Heating up to powerful 212°F steam, it disinfects, kills dust mites, bacteria and germs and puts an end to household dirt, grease and grime. The Handheld Steamer option can be used with 10 accessory attachments, which are conveniently stored on the back of the unit with a tool caddy. Small and large nylon brushes help remove stains and mildew from tile grout while a wire copper brush removes build up on grills and ovens. I'm slowly but surely steering away from using traditional household cleaners such as Windex, Lysol and bleach in my apartment. In fact, I'm beginning to find them irritating my skin and breathing. So I was seeking an entry-level portable steam cleaner that can help me clean the floor and also perform smaller cleaning tasks. I don't really need a larger steam cleaner, such as a Ladybug, because of the size of my apartment and I also wasn't looking to purchase multiple steam mops and handheld steamers. Well, when we came upon the Gruene I was thrilled to have everything I wanted in one convenient machine! I immediately brought it home to only tackle a few chores such as cleaning the floors, oven and microwave. However soon enough I found myself looking to clean more and more areas of the home. Here are the results from my fun day of cleaning.

  • The unit is relatively lightweight and I was able to carry up the stairs with little problem. The handheld section needs to be taken out of the steam mop "stand" in order to fill. The hole was a tad bit small when filling but I quickly realized it came with a fill cup and this solved the issue.
  • Once filled, I locked it in the stand and waited for the unit to start heating up. I was very happy with how quickly the unit heated up and in just a few minutes I was zapping away dirt, scuff marks and dust from the kitchen floor. The steam mop was not as dry as hoped and left the floors a little wet but it did do a great job with leaving the floors sparkling clean. I only had to wait around 10 minutes for the floors to dry. When using the old bucket and mop method in the past, I had to wait much much longer to enter the room, mainly because of the bothersome chemical smell that lingered around.
  • Next up was using multitude of attachments available (and there were many that are conveniently stored on the unit). I was able to take the attachments on and off with ease. However, make sure they are locked tightly as they can become loose and fly off when steaming.
  • First attachment I used was the standard nylon brush. I have never been able to clean off oil and grease on the oven stovetop so quickly and with such ease! I didn't have to apply a chemical-based cleaner and then let it sit to settle so it could slowly attack the caked on grease before wiping away. Just a few blasts of high temperature steam, a quick wipe with a towel and I had a glowing white oven.
  • This is when I started looking for more areas to clean. I noticed how much grime and dirt had collected on the undersides of the cabinet. This build-up can't be healthy to have just sitting there! I simply attached the jet nozzle and released the trigger where the steam proceeded to break everything up with ease.
  • I then moved onto the bathroom in which I proceeded to use the other brushes to remove scum and dirt tile grout, in the bathtub and around the sink. The window attachment did a nice job on the window without the traditional streaks caused by the Windex I used to use.

  • One major con was the steam mop option left the floors a bit wet. However, the steam mop method was much easier compared to my traditional bucket and mops method and still left the floors sparkling clean.
  • The fill hole can be a little tricky since it's tiny. We suggest either using the fill cup that is included or a funnel. Also, emptying the water tank can be a bit awkward
  • There were a few times when the tool caddy fell off but it was easy to click it back into place.

The Gruene is a great multi-functional cleaning tool that supplies a powerful steam to thoroughly clean not only hardwood floors but other surfaces such as countertops, kitchen sinks and bathtubs. With the Gruene, one can clean the home safely, effortlessly and at a much quicker pace compared to traditional cleaning methods.

I have used this product for: less than a month
Expertise: intermediate
This product is: the first product I have had like this
Better than expected! Date: February 17, 2010
Pros: high quality, effective, quiet, reliable, easy to use, met my expectations, like the handheld device & cleaning attachments, cleaning pad easy to install
Cons: attachment connection should be sturdier
I received my Gruene about 10 days ago and WOW am I impressed! I have a 2200 square foot home with about 1600 sf of tile - that's a lot of cleaning. Up until now I have been using a handheld mop and was usually exhausted after cleaning all of that tile.

This morning I cleaned the entire floor space for the second time since purchasing the unit and completed the task within about 50 minutes. It was actually very easy.

First I ran a vacuum over the tile to pick up any loose debris. It is a snap to attach the cleaning pad that comes with the unit. I have yet to use a different cloth with it but I can see how easy it would be to do so. That certainly adds even more flexibility. The pad stays in place with absolutely no drag and is very efficient. The water heats up very quickly and the tank holds quite a bit. I still had 1/3 water available in the tank when I was done with the floors.

After I did the kitchen I actually placed a tea towel down and using my feet moved it all over the floor to check for cleanliness. It was spotless and that's where the WOW factor really came in! The floors do get wet and need a few minutes to dry, but I think that is expected with a "steam" cleaner.

Next I cleaned the tile shower and the glass doors with the handheld. The attachments were easy to install and using the shoulder strap it was easy to hold on to the unit and clean at the same time. When I was done the shower sparkled - all without using ANY chemical cleaners!

I like the fact that there is a snap out hand held unit and the ease of installing the pad is a great feature. I have not used it on anything other than these few areas but want to try it on the stove grates.

The only complaint I have and it is really not a big issue, is that the attachment holder on the back of the unit has a tendency to fall off when using the floor portion of the unit. That is really not a big deal because now I just take it off now when cleaning and simply snap it back on for storage.

One big bonus that I was not aware of is the included storage pad for the unit. It is a piece of molded plastic that the steam cleaner sits on when not in use and I really like having it as it protects the floors from any residual water when stored.

I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. This is definitely a high quality unit and it is sturdy and flexible. Certainly worth the additional cost of the other generic cleaners out there. I think this unit will last a very long time, however it is nice to know that it comes with a one year warranty.

This steamer works!! Date: July 17, 2010
Pros: high quality, effective, quiet, reliable, easy to use, met my expectations
Bought this a couple of months ago. I researched a lot of cleaners. I had a Bissell floor mop. It was OK but died after a year. Was looking for something more dual purpose & this is it. Got lots of gunk off my oven door, cleans floors squeeky clean, does a nice job on windows & shower doors, worked great on faucets & have more to experiment with. Water is the best cleaner-no others needed with this. Cleaning cloths work better than I expected. Overall a great steamer for the price just wish I had bought when on sale so if you're thinking about this model now is the time to buy. This co. has very fast shipping!

Expected better Date: April 10, 2010
Cons: low quality, difficult to use, did not meet my expectations
I'd been using a vapor jet steam cleaner (NFI)and it was amazing, but too heavy for me to move around/up stairs, etc, so I was seeking a decent lightweight model. First issue - I'm sensitive to chemicals, which is the reason I shop on this site, and was surprised at how much the product reeks of new plastic - worse when turned on and in use - and who knows what else it might be offgassing. It wasn't the kind of "new" smell that went away after a few uses and causes me to feel pretty bad. This didn't happen with my original steamer. My husband has to use it for now while I am waiting (still, after a while) for it to offgass. If it doesn't soon, it's going back.

With the handheld cleaner, our thumbs were in pain from having to hold the button down the entire time you clean (bad design). Things don't get clean without pressing the steam button so there's no way around it.

Also because you have to use one hand to hold the switch on constantly, you can't use that hand to hold items you want to clean (the sink drain cover, etc). Frustrating.

The cheap cover to be used over the handheld attachments literally got a huge hole from the heat on the first use, and there was only one provided. The handheld attachments also warped out of shape also with the first use.

You have to push harder/go over areas more with the floor mop than with better quality steamers (that are more expensive of course) and, again, with only one mop head, it can be frustrating to have to wait for it to go through the wash before finishing cleaning. More should be provided, and should be better quality covers.

Finally, I tried to get answers from the company on some questions and did not get responses still so not so thrilled with customer service.

I'm going back to the big heavy Vapor Jet (no financial interest) and waiting for something good and lightweight to hit the market still...

I have used this product for: less than a month
Expertise: beginner
No more chemicals and elbow grease! Date: November 06, 2009
Pros: effective, easy to use, met my expectations
Cons: left floors a little wet
I have a smaller apartment and I'm slowly but surely going from cleaning with conventional chemical-based cleaners (Windex, bleach, etc) to using a steam cleaner. Since the area is smaller and there isn't a need to clean all that regularly I was looking for an affordable and compact entry-level steam cleaner that would quickly clean the floors and also help with cleaning the microwave, stove, sinks and the bathroom. I knew that the larger, boiler tank steam cleaning systems would be a little too much for my needs. The Gruene was the perfect fit. It was compact, lightweight, could mop the floors and came with the perfect set of tools for those detailed cleaning tasks. Here is how it performed so far:

- First I wanted to clean the dirt and dust the collected on the hardwood floors. The towel included is a nice quality and was easy to attach because of the locking system. The unit heated up almost immediately and within a few minutes I was gliding the unit back and forth while watching the dirt disappear. The steam mop did leave the floor a little wet as compared to some other steam mops I've tried but nonetheless it got the job done! No more swishing around the dirt with a mop and no more lingering smells from chemicals!
- Next up was a filthy microwave with lots of build up from splattered food. The handheld option was very easy to take out from the steam mop "stand" and the attachments were neatly stored and available on the tool caddy. I attached the extension hose and small triangle brush and started steaming away. The caked on food and mold stood no chance. 15 minutes later and with very little elbow grease I had a brand new microwave! I always hated using chemical-based cleaners to break down the build up inside the microwave. Who wants to heat up food along with chemical residues!?
- I did the same with the stove and used a round nylon brush to attack the grease and oils that splattered on the stovetop from an extensive weekend of cooking. It was a gleaming white afterwards. The wire brash brush was great for cleaning the grills. The Attachments are easy to take on and off, just make sure you the nozzle is locked in properly as it will fly off while steaming.
- I moved into the bathroom and steamed away soap scum in the tight corners and crevices with ease. I was amazed on how well it cleaned and sanitized the bathtub without the need to use the ever so irritating bleach. The squeegee attachment was perfect for cleaning the mirrors, no more Windex and paper towels!
- After each cleaning task the attachments were neatly placed back onto the on-board tool caddy. This reduces the risk of misplacing and losing any parts!
- The tank is small but amazingly I only had to refill once. Because of the flash heating system I had powerful steam instantly compared to waiting a few minutes for a tank to heat up.

The only cons I had was the steam mop option left the floors a little wet and I had to wait a few minutes to re-enter the room. After I released the trigger, the steam would continue to emit for a few seconds. After a while I got a hang of this and actually used it to my advantage since I could put down the handheld, grab a towel and collect the dirt and grime it was still blasting away. Overall, the Gruene helped me complete all of my cleaning chores in about an hour. And best of all, it was with only one unit! I didn't have to purchase and take out a separate mop, handheld steamer, traditional household cleaners, paper towels and other cleaning materials. Everything was done effectively and quickly with the all-in-one Gruene Steam Cleaner! Cleaning "chores" are now accomplished quickly, safely and with great ease because of the Gruene.
