The Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Pet offers excellent HEPA filtration of particles and provides light odor removal with a carbon pre-filter and Plasmawave technology. It is easy to operate with electronic controls and a remote. It has a special quiet-mode for bedroom use and effectively cleans the air in a 20' x 20' room (up to 400 sq. ft.). It represents a good quality, affordable choice for an allergy sufferer.
Pluses:
We were very impressed with the filtration efficiency of this air cleaner as our testing results showed a 98% average reduction in particles on the first air pass.
This air cleaner has been CADR tested to clean a room up to 400 sq. ft. which is very good for its size.
We were pleasantly surprised by how quiet the air cleaner is on speed 1, 2 and 3. It does not become loud until on turbo speed. It is also super quiet and the controls dim when set on Quiet-mode.
It has a unique look that should easily fit with most decors and since the air flow is in through the front and out through the top, it can be placed against a wall and not look out of place or be in the way.
As a bonus, 3 extra carbon pre-filters are included in the box, providing a years worth of filters for your first year of ownership. The costs and lifespan of the filters are reasonable. The HEPA filter will last about 12 months and costs $59.99 to replace. The carbon pre-filters come in a 3 pack for $39.99 and should be changed every 3-4 months.
Filter changes are a breeze with this air purifier, just remove the front grill and out come the filters.
We always love it when an air purifier has an auto-mode that adjusts the fan speed in accordance to the air quality. The Electrolux EL500AZ has a 5-stage odor sensor to monitor air quality.
The filter change indicator is located on the front the air purifier and will illuminate when it is time to change the HEPA filter. The filter change indicator light operates based on run time for a 12 month period. If you have really poor quality air you may want to check and replace the filter ever 6 to 8 months for best performance. When the HEPA filter is a dark gray in color it is time to change.
Minuses:
The carbon mesh pre-filter has minimal carbon and will work best for reducing light household odors. The Plasmawave technology does however give a boost to the minimal carbon to help neutralize odors caused from bacteria.
Though we did not smell ozone, our ozone meter did detect a very small amount of ozone, registering around 0.02 PPM which is well below the FDA required limit of 0.05 PPM (parts per million).
Electrolux's 1 year warranty is not very impressive. We feel they could have easily given this air purifier a 3 or 5 year warranty.
Summary:
We have long been a fan of Electrolux appliances as they work well, are decent quality and are affordable in price. Thus being said, we were very pleased when this air purifier became available for $299.99. What we didn’t expect though, was how great it was actually going to perform!
When we tested the Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Pet for filtration efficiency we were pleasantly surprised by its ability to remove an average of 98% of airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger on the first air pass. It also combines Plasmawave technology with a mesh pre-filter that has activated carbon in it to help absorb and neutralize odors. The Plasmawave technology can be tricky to grasp how it actually works, but it obviously does something because the amount of carbon in the pre-filter is very minimal and many customer reviews for this air purifier praise it for its ability to remove odors!
With its filtration performance and powerful fan, it will quickly have the air in your room fresh and clean. It is quiet on the lower speeds but on turbo it moves a ton of air and is noisy. It is certified by AHAM to clean a room up to 400 sq. ft., which we found impressive for its size. All too often you see the room coverage of air purifiers overstated, and just because an air purifier is large in size does not mean it will actually clean a large area with 4 to 6 air changes per hour.
At a first glance, you notice its unique design which looks similar to a stylish radiator. The nice thing about the design is it pulls air in through the front and releases clean air out through the top, allowing it to be place up against a wall, which is where most people instinctively want to place their air purifier. It is also very easy to operate with electronic push-button controls and a remote, both of which are actually simple to use. We are always pleased when an air purifier includes an air quality sensor and an auto-mode, as it makes continuous operation easy and very efficient. The Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Pet has a 5-stage odor sensor to detect changes in air quality which is great for pet owners and when you are cooking.
As a nice bonus, you get 3 extra carbon pre-filters when you purchase this air purifier. This means you will not have to worry about replacement filters your first year of using it. However, if you live in a highly polluted environment you may find your filters need replacing more than what is recommended. The replacement filters are not necessarily cheap but they are far more affordable then some. Annual replacement costs for this air purifier will run you around $100 if you replace the HEPA filter every 12 months and the carbon pre-filter every 4 months, which should keep the air purifier performing in tip-top shape. Filter replacements are a breeze and will take you less than a minute.
When all is said and done, we are pleased to offer this affordable air purifier and feel it will satisfy most customers' needs. It is a great choice if you are looking for your first air purifier or if you need relief from airborne allergens and common household odors. The Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Pet earned a 4.5 star "very good plus" rating from our testing team.
