The Dyson DC23 Turbinehead is an entry level price point for the Dyson full-size vacuum cleaner line and provides good quality suction power and allergy-friendly filtration. It is a full-size canister vacuum designed for larger homes with a mix of bare floors and low to medium pile carpets or area rugs. It’s bagless designed paired with washable filters means no extra costs.
Pluses:
- Good filtration with washable filters. This vacuum's filtration system is certified allergy and asthma friendly and we agree with that claim. Our testing results showed the washable HEPA exhaust filter was 93% effective at capturing all dust and dirt particles down to 0.3 microns.
- The turbinehead rotates 360° and is easy to maneuver. The canister is a bit heavy to pull around but thanks to its large rear wheels, it glides easily on a variety of floor surfaces.
- The vacuum features quick release buttons so with just a push of a button and a little tug it takes just seconds to remove the floor tool and put on an accessory tool to clean furniture or hard to reach corners and crevices.
- We were very pleased to see 3 good quality, full size accessory tools included with this vacuum and stored neatly onboard in integrated spots on the canister. The crevice tool offers a 5.25" reach which is much better than the 3" crevice tools we see all too often. The dusting brush is well designed to prevent clogging and the upholstery tool is full-size and functional.
- Good size cleaning radius with a maximum reach of 36.2 ft. The vacuum features a 21.6 ft power cord and adds an additional 14.6 ft of reach between the canister, hose and telescopic wand. The larger the cleaning radius the less you have to switch electrical outlets which means more efficient use of time for quicker vacuuming.
- The DC23 is very well made from strong materials and quality parts and should last for years. Dyson offers a 5 year warranty on the DC23 to protect your investment.
- Very good value for the price. This vacuum is an entry level price point for the Dyson canister line and though it may be a larger initial investment than you’d like to pay, it is not so bad when you figure you do not have to spend any extra money on replacement bags or filters over the life span of the vacuum. Not to mention it’s a good quality vacuum that should satisfy all the cleaning needs of those with bare floors and low or cut pile carpets, offering strong suction power, good quality filtration and longevity.
Minuses:
- The DC23 has only one suction speed which is great for cleaning floors and couches where full suction power is desired, but makes it difficult to clean small bathroom rugs and curtains, which require less suction power. It does have a suction release valve on the handle but its results are too minimal to notice a difference in suction power.
- Dyson does not make the quietest of vacuums and the DC23 is no exception. It does produce a fair amount of noise, but it is not unbearable or uncomfortable for the user, however will need to speak up if you want to talk while the vacuum is on.
- The turbinehead is not ideal for thick or high pile carpets or rugs. It is powered by the suction of the vacuum rather then by a separate motor so it does not have the power to lift crush pile or deep clean thick carpet and it is not adjustable in height so it will be hard to maneuver on high pile carpets.
- Turning the turbinehead brush roll on and off is not easy or convenient. In order to turn the brush roll off, you have to pull out a large red button which is located on the side of the turbinehead and it requires some strength to do so. It is easier to push back in to turn the brush roll on and could be operated with your hand or your foot.
- Emptying the dust bin is not allergy friendly. Though the filtration of this vacuum is allergy and asthma friendly, emptying the dust bin is not. Regardless of the fact you do not have to touch the dirt to empty the bin, when the bottom of the bin pops open and the dirt falls out, a dust cloud of particles is released back into the air and can trigger allergies or asthma. We recommend emptying the dust bin outside of the house and use a filtering face mask.
Summary:
For all those who are sick of vacuuming the same spot over and over and are fed up with the multiplying costs of replacement bags and HEPA filters, the Dyson DC23 Turbinehead is a good quality bagless canister vacuum with good filtration performance and the lowest price of the Dyson full-size vacuum cleaner line. Dyson is known for their suction power and no extra costs and the DC23 delivers just that. The included turbinehead floor tool is designed for carpets and bare floor cleaning but is limited in its carpet cleaning ability. It is best suited for low to medium pile carpets as it does not have the deep cleaning power of a power head and will be hard to move or get snagged in high pile carpet. We recommend the Dyson DC23 Turbinehead for those who live in a large home with a mix of bare floors and low to medium pile carpets or area rugs. The canister design is easier than an upright to carry up stairs, though the DC23 is still a bit bulky and heavy. This vacuum should last for many years and cost you little to nothing to maintain. The trade off for no bags or replacement filters is periodic cleaning of the filter and dust bin.
