The Dyson City DC26 is a sized down version of Dyson’s full size canister vacuum cleaner and still offers good suction power and quality filtration. This vacuum is ideal for apartments or small living quarters where a full-size vacuum cleaner is too big and bulky. It is bagless and has washable filters requiring no replacement bags and filters. It comes with a turbine head and is best suited for a mix of bare floors and low pile area rugs.
Pluses:
Great filtration with washable filters. This vacuum's filtration system is certified allergy and asthma friendly and we agree with that claim. Our testing results showed the washable HEPA exhaust filter was 96% effective at capturing all dust and dirt particles down to 0.3 microns.
Impressive full-size suction power.This vacuum offers the same suction power as Dyson's full-size canisters and uprights. This means you will easily be able to pick up dirt, dust and hair to achieve the level of clean you desire. Even small apartments and studios deserve to be clean and now they can be without having to sacrifice the floor space to store a large bulky vacuum.
The canister is so compact and lightweight that it is not a nuisance to drag around in a small or crowded space. Also, if you hate pulling around a canister or if there are just too many obstacles in a room, you can carry the canister in one hand using the large build-in handle attached to the dust bin and control the wand with the other - yes, it really is just that small and easy to use!
The vacuum features quick release buttons so with just a push of a button and a little tug it takes just seconds to swap out the turbine head for the hard floor brush or to remove the wand and use an accessory tool to clean the furniture and hard to reach crevices.
The DC26 is very well made from strong materials and quality parts and should last for years. Dyson offers a 5 year warranty on the DC26 to protect your investment.
A great value for those with limited space or storage. This vacuum is a dream come true for city dwellers with tight living quarters. It is very compact yet packs the power of a full-size vacuum which is hard to find in the vacuum cleaner market. Most small vacuums fail to do their job leaving much to be desired …and picked up.
Minuses:
The vacuum offers only one suction speed which is great for floors and couches, but can make it difficult to clean small bathroom rugs or lightweight upholstery such as curtains.
Dyson does not make the quietest of vacuums and the DC26 is no exception. It does produce a fair amount of noise for its small size, but it is not unbearable or uncomfortable for the user.
The turbine head is not ideal for thick or high pile carpets or rugs. It is small and not adjustable in height so it does best on low pile carpets and rugs.
Accessory tools are small and we are never a fan of combination accessory tools as they are only okay at two jobs rather than good at one. Though we are glad they are included and stored onboard, we have found accessory tools stored on the wand tend to get in the way when you are operating the vacuum and are easily knocked off and lost.
Though this vacuum is a fraction of the size of a full-size vacuum, it still comes with a full-size price tag. Coming in at the same price as the full-size Dyson DC23 turbine head it seems a little pricey, but Dyson is able to cram all the power of the larger vacuums into this little model so that must be worth something.
Emptying the dust bin is not allergy friendly. Though the filtration of this vacuum is allergy and asthma friendly, emptying the dust bin is not. Regardless of the fact you do not have to touch the dirt to empty the bin, when the bottom of the bin pops open and the dirt falls out, a dust cloud of particles is released back into the air and can trigger allergies or asthma. We recommend emptying the dust bin outside of the house and use a filtering face mask.
Summary:
This is a shrunken down version of Dyson's DC23 canister vacuum for all those who would like a powerful vacuum cleaner but just don’t have the need or the storage space for a bulky upright or full-size canister. Besides its small design, the nice thing about the Dyson DC26 is it provides enough suction power to actually pick up dirt, dust and hair from bare floors, area rugs and furniture, a nice improvement over many of the readily available small units out there. Do keep in mind that it is limited in its carpet cleaning ability due to the turbine head which is powered by the suction power of the vacuum and best suited for low pile carpets and bare floors. If you have a fully carpeted apartment it may not be the best fit. Also, since this vacuum is designed for use in small square foot areas, its features such as size of floor tools, accessory tools, cord length and dust bin capacity are all smaller than what is found on a full-size vacuum. And lastly, despite its smaller size it does come with a full-size Dyson price tag. However, because of its functionality and durability it may very well be the last vacuum you need for your small apartment, and since it requires no replacement bags or filters and is covered by a 5 year warranty it actually turns out to be a very good value.
