The Dyson DC24 Animal is lightweight and smaller in size than Dyson’s DC25 upright vacuum cleaners. It has good suction power and a sealed HEPA filtration system. It effectively removes pet hair and dirt from carpets, bare floors and upholstery.
Pluses:
This vacuum offers good quality filtration and exhausts clean and fresh air back into the room. Our testing showed that the HEPA exhaust filter captured 93% of particles larger than 0.3 microns and we did not notice any area where the vacuum leaked unfiltered air into the room.
The strong suction power of this vacuum combined with the aggressive agitation of the brush bar effortlessly removed dirt and hair from the carpet. It even managed to pick up debris from floors that were just recently vacuumed by a different vacuum.
No bags to replace and filters are washable! Bagless vacuums are a huge plus for pet owners because you will not have to spend endless amounts of money on replacement bags that fill up quickly with pet hair. On top of being bagless, the DC24 Animal use a washable exhaust filter that is designed to last the lifetime of the vacuum. However, the filter does require cleaning every 3 months to maintain its filtration efficiency, and you will occasionally have to clean the dust bin, but it’s a pretty fair trade off for the money you will save!
Large, easy to use control buttons. Controls are located on top of the body of the vacuum and are in a good location for easy reach and the big buttons are easy to push on or off.
Compact and lightweight. The DC24 is quite a bit smaller than Dyson’s full size DC25 and other upright vacuum models. It is lighter in weight and has a smaller body and power head, but what’s best is the retractable handle that you extend while using and compress when you are done so the vacuum becomes short and compact for easy storage.
Requires less effort to maneuver. The ball design makes maneuvering this vacuum very easy, especially when it comes to turning around corners and around furniture. Since this vacuum is smaller in size and only weighs 11.65 lbs it is easier to maneuver and causes less stress and fatigue on your arm.
Mini turbo brush included. This tool did a good job at removing pet hair from couches, chairs and staircase.
Durable vacuum with a 5 yr warranty. Dyson vacuums are very well made from strong materials and quality parts and should last for years. To prove they stand behind their products they offer a 5 year warranty on parts and labor.
Minuses:
The DC24 Animal has only one suction speed which is great for cleaning floors and couches where full suction power is desired, but makes it difficult to clean small bathroom rugs and curtains, which require less suction power.
Dyson does not make the quietest of vacuums and the DC24 is no exception. It does produce a fair amount of noise, but it is not unbearable or uncomfortable for the user, however will need to speak up if you want to talk while the vacuum is on.
Removing wand can be tricky. Once you figure it out it is no longer hard, but trying to remove the handle and wand from the vacuum for the first time can be difficult if you do not follow the instructions. Dyson is notorious for integrating the extended reach cleaning on their vacuums in ways that are not intuitive for first time users to figure out.
Hard to reach under furniture. The design of the powerhead is compact and short which prevents it from reaching under furniture and the round shape of this vacuum gives it more depth which requires a higher clearance to fit under furniture.
Because the powerhead does not have carpet height adjustment, it is best suited for low and medium pile thick and thin carpet varieties. High or tall pile carpet such as shag will be hard to maneuver on and can get caught in the brush bar.
No tool for cleaning crevices. The combination accessory tool that comes with this vacuum makes an ok dusting brush, but when it is transformed into the debris nozzle it functions more as a small upholstery tool as it is too wide and too short to be an effective crevice tool.
Short power cord. The power cord on this vacuum is only 20 ft long which is short for an upright vacuum where the average power cord is somewhere between 30-40 ft long.
Emptying the dust bin is not allergy friendly. Though the filtration of this vacuum is allergy and asthma friendly, emptying the dust bin is not. Regardless of the fact you do not have to touch the dirt to empty the bin, when the bottom of the bin pops open and the dirt falls out, a dust cloud of particles is released back into the air and can trigger allergies or asthma. We recommend emptying the dust bin outside of the house and use a filtering face mask.
Summary:
The DC24 Animal is Dyson’s compact upright vacuum cleaner packaged with a mini turbine head for easy removal of pet hair from upholstery, stairs and car interiors. It has strong suction power (though not quite as strong as Dyson’s full-size uprights) and aggressive brush roll action that lifts dirt and pet from carpets with easy. Turn the brush roll off and it will safely and effectively clean bare floors. It’s compact size and ball design offers superb maneuverability and is perfect for smaller size homes where a full-size upright can seem bulky and cumbersome. The downfall to the smaller size is a shorter power cord, smaller capacity dust bin and slightly smaller cleaning path. However if you get this vacuum because you live in an apartment or small home, none of these should be an issue.
