Dyson came out with the DC24 and the DC25 upright vacuums with the ball technology and the result is a light and very maneuverable upright that provides plenty of suction power. The DC24 also features an ultra-compact design that is great for smaller apartments or condos.
Pluses:
These vacuums have an effective filtration system and are certified allergy and asthma friendly. Our testing results showed the vacuums are a sealed system and do not leak dust particles back into the room and their exhaust filters are 93% effective at capturing all particles larger than 0.3 microns.
The Dyson vacuum's are easy to assemble and every piece clicks into place with minimal effort.
Dyson Ball™ technology make these vacuums very easy to maneuver and they turn on a dime to easily fit around furniture and corners.
Root Cyclone™ technology provides strong suction power for excellent pick-up, even when the dust bin starts to fill up.
Both the DC24 and DC25 feature non-bulky designs and they are fairly lightweight for upright vacuums, which helps make them easier to handle and store when not in use.
The power heads have very good suction power and aggressive brush roll action to deep clean carpets. We noticed these vacuums sucked up dirt that other vacuums left behind. They also offer good edge cleaning, but only on one side.
The large foot pedal to release the vacuum from its upright position is easy for everyone to use.
The large push button power and rug/bare floor controls are located at the base of the vacuum handle and easy to access when vacuum is in the reclined (in use) position.
No bags to replace and filters are washable!
The dust bin removes easily for emptying with a push of a button and it is easy to access the filter which is a must since the filters require washing every 3 months.
The accessory tools, stretch hose and wand are integrated on the vacuum and always ready to use for cleaning high or hard reach places. The tools slide on the wand or hose handle easily. It can be slightly confusing at first to remove hose and wand from their integrated spots, but once you learn the steps to remove them it is easy.
Dyson offers an excellent warranty that covers parts and labor for 5 years.
Minuses:
Though the power head is compact it is not designed to be able to reach under furniture and the ball obstructs the power head's ability to offer edge cleaning under kitchen cabinets.
We would have liked the vacuums to have a suction adjustment and carpet height adjustment on the power head because the strong suction made it difficult to vacuum small rugs and it had a lot of resistance when used on high pile carpet such as shag. Also, the onboard accessory tools are not as nice as those found on the other upright vacuums we carry, but we were happy that they included tools and integrated them onboard.
The single speed motor produces a fair amount of noise. We would not call these vacuums quiet, but they are not unbearably loud and you can vacuum without hurting your ears.
We were not overly impressed with the onboard accessory tools. The DC24 has one combination accessory tool that is a dust brush and an upholstery tool and neither is that effective at its job. The DC25 has two accessory tools, a combination crevice tool and dusting brush and an upholstery tool. The upholstery tool has a standard design and works as expected. As with most combination tools, the combination crevice tool and dusting brush is mediocre at either task.
The power cord on DC24 vacuum is only 20 ft long and DC25 is only 25 ft long. This is short for an upright vacuum where the average power cord is somewhere between 30-40 ft long. In larger homes you will have to change power outlets more frequently.
Emptying the dust bin is not allergy friendly. Though the filtration of these vacuums is allergy and asthma friendly, emptying the dust bin is not. Regardless of the fact you do not have to touch the dirt to empty the bin, when the bottom of the bin pops open and the dirt falls out, a dust cloud of particles is released back into the air and can trigger allergies or asthma. We recommend emptying the dust bin outside of the house and use a filtering face mask.
Summary:
We were not sure what to expect when we tested the Dyson Ball™ DC24 and DC25 vacuum cleaners, and as a result we were pleasantly surprised. The dynamics of the Ball™ technology truly reduced the amount of effort needed to control and maneuver the vacuums around the house. We were impressed by the suction power of these vacuums and their ability to pick-up pet hair was one of the best we have seen. We recommend the Dyson vacuums for households that are mostly carpeted. They can also be used on bare floors since the brush roll can be turned off and they have a rubber strip behind the brush roll to help prevent dirt from being kicked around. The DC24 has a compact design and is extremely light for an upright. It would be a great choice for carpeted apartments, condos, or small multiple levels homes.
