Due to filtration of particulates and contaminants from the water during use, the flow of the water from the filter may deteriorate over a period of time. To restore the water flow to its normal level, simply remove and clean by scrubbing the surface of the filter with an abrasive non detergent scouring pad. The reduced flow of water would be the indicator that it is time to clean your filter. The cleaning frequency will depend upon the quality of the water supply. Depending on use and water conditions filter should be replaced once a year.

Summary:
I have been using this water filter for about a year now in my apartment and I can not imagine going back to a Brita filter or unfiltered tap water or even worst, buying bottled water. Water is my favorite drink and I drink a lot of it. I grew up in northern Vermont, an area where most everyone has a private well and drinks unfiltered tap water. When I moved to the Boston area there was no way I was drinking the tap water! As a new-be to water filtration I started using a Brita filter and though my water knowledge at the time was minimal, I knew it was far from good water. Thanks to AllergyBuyersClub I had the opportunity to become educated on water and what it should smell like (odorless) and taste like (refreshing but tasteless). Immediately upon using the Doulton Countertop water filter, which was so easy to set up and start using, I truly fell in love with water again. I made all my friends and family drink "my great water" when they came to visit and have yet to find someone who doesn't enjoy drinking water from this filter. It beats a Brita filter by a million times, producing cleaner, fresher, better tasting water that is delivered in a nice strong stream without ever having black specs or a chlorine smell. One of the greatest surprises to me was how dirty my tap water actually was even though it did not look or small bad. I have to clean my filter at least once a month due to a rusty color sediment that the filter captures. How grateful I am that the particles end up on the filter and not in my body! Grateful enough that I do not mind one bit the process of removing the cover and scrubbing down the filter with a rough sponge, a process that takes about 1 minute as long as I can get some help unscrewing the cover. I have just recently replaced the Ultracarb filter and was very pleased to have gotten a whole year worth of use out of 1 filter before needing to buy a replacement. All I can say is this water filter is well worth the investment and if you are using a cheap, mediocre water filter, UPGRADE, you will not be disappointed and your body will thank you!
