The Austin Air Pet Machine air purifier features a special carbon filter that is blended with zeolite and enhanced with an ammonia absorbing additive which makes it ideal for absorbing common pet odor issues. Along with its superior odor filtration, the Pet Machine offers very good HEPA filtration of irritating particles and allergens.
Pluses:
The Austin Air Pet Machine’s 4-stage filter design is great for dealing with the airborne debris and particles found in homes with pets. The double pre-filters trap larger particles and prevents them from prematurely saturating the HEPA filter so it can focus on capturing the tiny irritating airborne allergens such as fine dust and pet dander. Our testing results showed an average 86% reduction in particles larger than 0.3 microns in the first air pass.
The Pet Machine uses a large amount of a uniquely blended carbon that has been enhanced with a special additive designed to absorb ammonia-based pet odors. Our reviewers with dogs and cats were please to notice a significant improvement to the freshness of their indoor air after running the machine on medium fan speed for 24 hours.
Long lasting filters. The filter used by the Austin Air Pet Machine air purifier can lasts up to 5 years before it needs replacement. We were initially impressed that the only maintenance required was to replacing the filter every 5 years and periodically vacuum the large pre-filter from outside the unit. However, after quite a few years of personal experience with the Austin Air units, we can report that when running them constantly 24/7, a more realistic life expectancy for the filter is 2 to 4 years, with the carbon becoming saturated before the HEPA filter. None the less, the filter is protected by a 5 year pro-rated guarantee.
The Austin Air Pet Machine offers very affordable filter replacement costs with average annual replacement costs over a 5 year period of $53.
The Austin Air Pet Machine air purifier has a steel housing with a baked-on powder coat finish. It is a good, safe choice for those irritated by plastic off-gassing.

Minuses:
Not our quietest air purifier. Our testing team found the Austin Air Pet Machine air purifier to be noisy on the high and medium speed, but agreed the low speed is quiet enough to use in a bedroom while sleeping, depending on your noise sensitivity. High speed is best suited for quick cleaning or for use when you are not in the room. The medium speed is okay if there is already some background noise.
No filter change indicator. If there is anything we would like Austin Air to change, it would be the addition of some type of filter monitoring device to remove the guesswork out of when one should replace the filter. Currently the only way to tell the carbon needs to be replaced is when one can start to smell it, as once it is saturated it will start to off-gas odors.
Replacing the filters is not a 60 second job. We found that in order to really clean the pre-filter it is necessary to remove the bottom plate by removing 4 screws and take it out from the air purifier to give it a thorough cleaning. This is a bit time consuming, so we would recommend replacing the pre-filter once a year. Replacing the filters is a bit tricky as the cylindrical filter is heavy and the bottom plate must be perfectly in line with the holes in order to tightly screw it back together.
Austin Air overstates the room coverage of the Pet Machine air purifier at up to 1500 sq. ft. Actual maximum room coverage for the Austin Air Pet Machine air purifier is more like 313 sq. ft. while running on high fan speed in order to achieve 6 air changes per hour. This is still a large area coverage and will be a good fit for most average sized rooms or pet areas.
Summary:
The Austin Air Pet Machine is a great all-around air purifier with the special ability to absorb those stubborn pet odors. Its 2 pre-filters prevent the HEPA filter from clogging with pet hair so it can trap the tiny pet dander particles which cause irritation. The Pet Machine air purifier is a dream come true for those who own multiple pets and struggle to keep a clean, fresh and healthy indoor environment. The long filter life and minimal maintenance is a huge plus for all of us with very busy daily lives.
