Dear Everyone

We spent November moving, moving, moving into our new offices. We are thrilled with our new location, less than thrilled with the air quality. You can read about our journey to improve our office’s air quality in this issue and in the next newsletter.

Nevertheless, even with our moving project we have still launched our website’s new look and logo, unveiled the new “Learning Center” and the new product acquisition team is as busy as ever.

I cannot believe it is December already and the Holiday Season is upon us. I feel very proud of the way Allergy Buyers Club has grown, thanks to you, and the work our staff has done on the website all year. I work with a wonderful group of people and could not have achieved this result alone.

I am always moved when some of you write and tell me the difference that our products are making in your lives. It feels satisfying to be spending my time doing something that contributes to people’s health. There has been a lot of ill-health in my immediate family this year. My husband has always said if you have your health you have the most important thing in your life.

So treasure your health, and your families these Holidays and let the most important people in your life know how much you care about them.

HYPOALLERGENIC CHRISTMAS TREES

If you're looking for an alternative to your traditional tree and you could benefit from a pollen-free holiday environment, give the Leyland Cypress a try. The Leyland Cypress is a combination of the Alaskan Cedar and Monterrey Cypress from Mexico. It was developed by the British in the 19-40s as an ornamental tree. The tree was brought into Texas in 19-82 as an alternative Christmas tree for growers. Because it's a true hybrid, the Leyland cannot produce pollen, giving allergy suffers the option of having a natural evergreen in the house for Christmas. The most common Christmas tree grown in Texas is the Virginia Pine. It is a thick, very dense evergreen. The Leyland Cypress is less dense and looks more like a fir tree. The Leyland Cypress was in short supply last year because growers did not have the tree long enough to build up a good supply. Tree farms should be better stocked this year.

"Christmas tree asthma" causes coughing and wheezing and can ruin Christmas for those affected. For years this problem along with associated nasal congestion and sneezing were thought to be caused by molds growing on the Christmas tree. New research, however, indicates the real culprits are oleoresins produced by the tree itself. Ironically, it is these same oleoresins that give Christmas trees their pleasant Christmas smell. Since Leyland cypress emits only limited quantities of oleoresins, they produce very little odor -- hence, their potential to benefit allergy sufferers.

CLEANING UP THE AIR AT OUR NEW OFFICES

While we are all thrilled to have moved into our new office, we find that the air quality is a far cry from our last office. In fact, it is an air quality disaster. We are on a busy highway, our parking lot has buses come in and out, we are next door to a garage and our neighbors in the building smoke! When we first took particulate readings in the office and outside, our staff thought there had to be a mistake…. they had never seen readings so high. I have been drooping around the office complaining of itching eyes and a congested chest and wondering if I was going to have to work from home on a temporary basis. Physician, cure thyself!

So this is what we are doing, and I will report out the results to you by next month with the data of incremental (or perhaps not) benefits of each step of the way. We have only just started on this project but thought you might be interested in our plan of attack.

A. We considered central HEPA filtration but because part of our heating system is shared (we cannot afford to clean the whole building!), we decided on buying a bunch of IQAir systems. We have 4300 square feet with high ceilings. We bought four IQAir Healthpro Pluses and three IQAir MultiGas models. The Multigas carbon cartridges are on back order but we are running the HEPA filters. Results to date, we have reduced the particulate monitor readings by nearly 50% in the first 48 hours (remember our high rate of recontamination). We’re going to run the filters on high all night to see if we can get even better readings. We turn them down to level 3 and 4 in the daytime.

Actually, I am feeling better already... my eyes are not stinging today.

B. We are arranging with landlord to allow us to put our Guardian Filters on the building’s furnaces. The outside air is so disgusting this HAS to be helpful in stopping the really larger particulates from even entering the building.

C. We will climb up and peer into the duct -work. We know that although they have filters that they have never been cleaned. When in doubt, we will get them cleaned ourselves as our landlord will not shoulder the expense, but will let us do it.

D. We will ask our smoking neighbors not to smoke, but quite frankly we think it is unlikely.

F. Okay, the place smells bad. The HealthPro carbon filters have improved the smell noticeably but when our soon to arrive Multigas carbon filters have done their bit, I will get a student to vapor steam the whole place and get that “sweet clean” smell I like so much going here.

G. Incidentally, the water also tastes terrible so we have a Sun-Pure under the counter water filter ordered for our kitchen. The staff voted for a water cooler as a status symbol, but were told firmly by me that our under-counter water filters work just as well, if not better, due to their multi-stage filtration process. Bottled water is such an unnecessary expense.

I will give you all exact data next month on our series of air quality readings. I am bound and determined to get the air squeaky clean around here and I will let you all know which actions we took made the most difference.

AIR SAMPLING PROCEDURES

Air Sampling Strategies Following Recent Tragedies

There have been at least three types of fires following the tragic events of September 11th in Washington DC and New York that may have contributed to toxic pollutants in the air surrounding the disaster sites. A general air quality profile that may be able to determine whether there are toxic pollutants from the fires that may be present surrounding the disaster area is described in this article. The first type was a fuel fire with jet fuel as the main contributor. The second type of fire was a waste fire that included the burning of plastic, paper, foam rubber, metallic parts, building material, insulation, flooring materials, lumber and various chemicals. Lastly, there was an electrical fire that included computers, wiring, circuits, and light fixtures.

Airborne Particulates are discrete particles that can be described as dust, fumes, smoke, or mist. Health effects from exposure to airborne particulates will depend on the chemical and physical characteristics of the contaminant that is present. However, depending on the material, health effects can range from allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, irritation of the nose and or throat, bacterial or fungal infections, systemic toxic effects (as in the case of heavy metal exposure) to carcinogenic effects (i.e. asbestos, PAHs, pesticides, and other chemical exposures).

Carbon Monoxide is a combustion pollutant that is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas. At elevated concentrations it can cause headaches, fatigue, queasiness, vision problems, and heart pains. Carbon Monoxide may be found at elevated levels due to the condition of the outdoor air surrounding the World Trade Center.

A Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) test will detect fuel components (C4 to C8 carbon range) like benzene, toluene, xylenes, and trimethylbenzenes as well as universal chemicals like tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, acetone,! freon, chloroform, bromoform, and vinyl chloride. Health effects from exposure to VOCs can range from irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat to headaches to liver, heart and nerve damage. In addition, various VOCs are suspected carcinogens.

A Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOC) test will detect polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are incomplete combustion by-products that may have been generated in the fuel and chemical fires. PAHs are highly carcinogenic and can cause nose, throat, and eye irritation. In addition, this test will also include results for any phthalates and phenols that may be detected.
Phthalates are chemicals that are present in most plastic products and can pose health risks in high concentrations. Phenols are the chemicals used in resins, adhesives, and construction materials. They are also found naturally in decaying dead organic matter.
Dioxins are emitted during combustion of industrial waste, wood and gasoline burning and can be present in other chemicals. Dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) can be very toxic even in low concentrations. 2,3,7,8-TCDD exposure can be the cause of weight loss, skin disorders, immune system damage, impaired liver function, altered blood function, impaired reproduction/birth defects, increased incidence of tumors and enzyme production. There are approximately 75 different dioxin compounds but 2,3,7,8-TCDD appears to be one of the more toxic compounds.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are chemicals that were used in many different types of products including hydraulic fluid, casting wax, pigments, carbonless copy paper, plasticizer, vacuum pumps, compressors, and heat transfer systems. They can also be found in the ballasts of fluorescence lights. Their primary use, however, was as a dielectric fluid in electrical equipment because of their exceptional insulating properties. Historically, because of their fire resistance, they were also required by some fire codes. PCBs are resistant to degradation ! and therefore persists in the environment for many years. Because of the health and environmental risks associated with PCBs, a ban of manufacturing of PCBs was made in 1976, use and disposal was then regulated in 1978. Equipment manufactured with PCBs was allowed to remain as long as the equipment functioned properly. Among the health affects of PCBs are skin ailments called chloracne, reproductive disorders, liver disease and cancer. PCBs are a suspected human carcinogen and a known animal carcinogen.

Fuel Fingerprint testing can be performed on dust, wipes or air. Jet fuel is an obvious contaminant at the site as well as fuel from surrounding vehicles. Jet and diesel constituents are not considered to be Volatile Organic Compounds due the their large alkane structures and therefore will not be detected by the VOC instrument and analysis.

There may be a multitude of metallic compounds involved in the fires that include arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, tin, aluminum, and possibly gold to name a few. Health effects to metals exposure will depend on the individual metals and concentrations.

Mercury is analyzed in a different manner (cold vapor atomic absorption testing) than the other metals and therefore requires a separate test. Mercury can be found in fluorescent lighting, high intensity lamps, batteries, non-electric thermostats, thermometers, electrical switches in lights and appliances, and cross-contaminated cleaning solutions with caustic soda or chlorine. Coal, oil or natural gas burning fuels can also contribute to mercury levels in the air. Mercury contamination can remain airborne or settle out after rains or weather with high humidity. Elemental mercury is most toxic in the vapor form but can vaporize at room temperature or exposure to high heat. The vapors can absorb onto surrounding materials and is very difficult to remove from porous substances like carpet, clothing, or furniture. Health effects from mercury exposure can range from trem! ors, changes in vision and hearing, insomnia, weakness, memory difficulty, headache, irritability, to dermatitis.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used in many building materials due to its exceptional fire retardant and insulating qualities. Asbestos exposure occurs through inhalation of the fibers with health effects ranging from lung scarring (Asbestosis), lung cancer, and to cancer of the pleura lining (Mesothelioma). To be of significant health concern exposure levels must be at high concentrations for long periods of time.

Microbial Fact #1
Psychrophilic microorganisms are microorganisms that tolerate rather than prefer very low temperatures, their optimum temperatures for growth are below 20 C, but they multiply at a substantial rate even at 0 C.

Fungal Fact #1
Myxomycetes are an ubiquitous, type I allergen, often found on decaying plant material, although it occasionally is found indoors. Dispersed by wind in the dry phase, while the wet amoebic phase is motile. Myxomycetes exhibit characteristics of protozoans and fungi. Indistinguishable from smuts under 600x microscopy.

STEAM CLEANERS: MOST OFTEN QUESTIONS TO OUR STAFF
By Bob Cobe, Allergy Buyers Club

We tried to think of every single question you could think of and put it up on the web but my staff tell me they have been fielding quite a few questions on steam cleaners. Here is what most people ask.

Q. HOW DO STEAM VAPOR CLEANERS USE ONLY WATER TO DO THE CLEANING?
A.
* The heat emulsifies the grease and chemicals and then the hot towel draws the emulsified “stuff” into it. Only “dry steam” is added to the carpet that dries in as little as a few seconds.
* Should you be chemical sensitive, you will not be adding chemicals to the carpet, but instead you will be removing them.

Q. ARE STEAM CLEANERS SAFE?

A. Yes, if you get a quality system with safety features (switches, pressure gauges, etc) and use proper caution.

Q. CAN I BURN MYSELF?
A. Yes, if you don’t exercise reasonable caution, but the incidence of this is pretty rare.

Q. HOW DOES A STEAM CLEANER KILL DUST MITES?
A. By heat.: Dust-mites die @ 130 degrees and temp at nozzle is about 180 degrees (trapped steam temp is up to 250 degrees)

Q. How would I actually use it to kill dust-mites?
A. Move tool slowly; only one pass is needed.

Q. Does it kill the dust mites permanently?
A. No you will need to steam again about 8 weeks later.

Q. WHAT ARE BIOFILMS?
A. Organisms that live in colonies and form a protective covering over them are called biofilms.
* These organisms often live in layers making them hard to clean.
* Steam kills the entire colony and removes the organisms from the surface.
* Chemical cleaning may kill only the top layer and then leave the organisms there.

Q. DOES A STEAM CLEANER KILL VISIBLE MOLD IN A BASEMENT?
A. Not always because some molds are heat resistant.

Q. DOES IT WORK ON VINYL, LINOLEUM, OR HARDWOOD FLOORS?
A. Yes, very well.
* Keep the brush moving.
* Do not leave the brush on the floor with the head down(it will burn the floor)

Q. WHY ARE MOST STEAM CLEANING SERVICES INEFFECTIVE FOR CLEANING CARPETS OR DUST-MITES?
A. * Most use a chemical extraction process.
* They are really not “steam cleaning” because the heat delivered at their nozzle is not hot enough after traveling through their long hose.
* Nozzle heat needs to be at least 130 degrees to kill dust-mites.
* If it’s chemical extraction, you’re adding chemicals not removing them.
* The carpet may remain wet for hours allowing mold to breed and more dust-mites.

Q. WHAT IS WICKING IN CARPETS?
A. * A natural process that pulls stains toward heat.
* In steam cleaning the heat is at the surface of the carpet.

Q. ARE STEAM CLEANERS EFFECTIVE IN CLEANING CARPETS?
A. Yes. The spot removal and general carpet revitalization is excellent but it is a lengthy process and you may want to use a regular hot water extraction cleaning unit first to get up major dirt.

Q. HOW ABOUT PET ACCIDENTS IN AND ON CARPETS? HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT CLEANING THOSE UP?
A. It will remove them unless the messes have something in them that causes a chemical reaction with the fibers. The odor will be strongly present while you are cleaning, but will soon dissipate and the fabric will now be odor free.
To clean: Blot up and remove any solids or wetness. Preferably, mist with the 212 cleaner, and then clean. May need to do more than once, but keep at it.Berber carpets are very difficult: The stain may get larger because of the weave, but usually will come out.

Q. HOW CAN VAPOR STEAM CLEANERS HELP IN REMOVING PET HAIR FROM CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY?
A. The heat removes the static charge present in all hair and allows the hair to be easily vacuumed afterward. Any pet odors will also be removed.

Q. HOW ABOUT HARD WATER SPOTS ON MY SHOWER?
A. * Probably not because the spots are usually a chemical stain. But try rubbing lemon juice first and then steam.
* If the shower is new, the steam cleaner is excellent for maintaining that new look.

Q. HOW CAN A STEAM CLEANER CLEAN MY OVEN?
A. * It is high heat, not pressure or scrubbing that does the cleaning.
* Use either the brass brush or the stainless pad, both of which become very hot and retain the heat by trapping the steam. Move the brush fairly quickly over the metal letting the heat do the work. A little scrubbing will help.
* If the brushes seem to stop cleaning, move them away from the area you are working on and allow that area to cool off. (You have probably heated the area you are cleaning to a temperature where it is drawing the grime back to itself.)

Q. IS A VAPOR STEAM CLEANER EFFECTIVE IN GROUT CLEANING?
A. Yes, in most instances.
* It will not clean silicone grout if the grime is not on the surface, because some stains will have come from the backside and have chemically permeated through the grout.
* Move the brass or nylon brush back and forth slowly in a small area, perhaps 12”.First with the bristles straight ahead and then from the center toward the edges at an angle.

Q. CAN I PUT A CLEANING FLUID INTO THE MACHINE TO MAKE IT WORK BETTER?
A. No! Absolutely not.
* You will destroy the machine and invalidate the warranty.

Q. WHY ARE SOME MACHINES SO EXPENSIVE? I’VE SEEN SOME INEXPENSIVE MACHINES ADVERTISED.
A. * Basically, you get what you pay for.
* Expensive units usually have safety features, quality stainless steel boilers, heavier wiring, better switches, more insulation, the heating unit mounted inside the boiler, more attachments, better quality attachments, fewer repairs that will be needed, and a greater length of time you can expect them to last. You get what you pay for.

Q. HOW LONG WILL A VAPOR STEAM CLEANER LAST?
A. A quality unit will last up to 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance and some minor repairs that are bound to be needed from time to time.

Q. I WOULD LIKE TO BUY A VAPOR STEAM CLEANER BUT I AM CONFUSED AS TO WHICH MODEL I SHOULD BUY. EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE VAPOR JET 2400, LADYBUG XL, LADYBUG, OR TIDYVAP?
A. Differences and features are thus:

Vaporjet ($2094)
* Designed for commercial use and warranted for commercial use. (Continuous use)
* Holds 5 quarts of water; that allows 3-4 hours of operation between water fillings.
* Weight of unit without water: 16 pounds. With water: 24 pounds
* continuous fill feature ,double valves that allow for more pressure and heat to be produced.
* heavier duty wiring and insulation.
* stainless steel boiler
* pressure gauge

Suggested Options:
The unit has 2 fixed wheels and 2 rotating; it can be mounted on a cart for easier moving.
Leather saddle bag: protects housing, carries tools, and has top handle for easier moving.

LadyBug XL ($1299.95)
* Designed for residential use and light commercial use (2-3 hours every day)
* Holds about 2.5 quarts of water (about 45 minutes use)
* Weight without water is 16 pounds with water is 24 pounds
* Has: continuous fill feature, stainless steel boiler, pressure gauge, 5 wheels that turn 360 degrees for very easy moving, 6 minute start up time, 3 year warranty on boiler
* Not quite as much pressure or heat as the Vaporjet.
* Larger footprint than the LadyBug (which makes it harder to get up stairways or narrow hallways than the LadyBug)

LadyBug ($1099.95)
* Residential use machine
* Holds about 2.2 quarts of water (about 30+ minutes of use)
* Weight without water is 15 pounds, with water is 23 pounds
* Has continuous fill feature
* stainless steel boiler
* pressure gauge
* 8 minute start up time
* 3 year warranty on boiler

Tidyvap ($749.95)
* Designed for residential limited use
* Holds about 1.5 quarts of water (about 20 minutes of use)
* Weight without water is 15 pounds, with water is 21 pounds
* Has continuous fill feature
* high quality stainless steel boiler
* same design as LadyBug and LadyBug XL, but is blue instead of red
* 1 year warranty on boiler

*Doesn’t have: pressure gauge which would provide a little more safety.

Q. HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE AN ECOPRO TO A TIDYVAP OR A LADYBUG?
A. * EcoPro is a good non continuous system which means that the unit must be allowed to cool before refilling and then be allowed to heat up again.
* The EcoPro has 110 volts of electricity running through the handle as opposed to 9.
* EcoPro has a metal tip on the nozzle which could remain hot and burn you and possibly scratch some materials. TidyVap and LadyBugs have a plastic tip.
* EcoPro tools need to be screwed on and off which makes it more prone to burn hands. The tools may loosen as they heat up requiring more handling at the tip.

Q. HOW DO YOUR STEAM CLEANERS COMPARE TO:
A. Comparisons are thus:

EuroPro: ($179- $199)
* 110 volts present in the handle (9 volt in LadyBug handle)
* No insulation on the boiler; housing can get too hot for children to touch.
* No safety cap
* Volume control for steam not adjustable; basically just on or off.
* Hose doesn’t disconnect from machine
* The fitting on the hose is not made for pulling unit by the hose
* Non continuous fill; must wait for unit to cool down, fill, and then warm up.
* Tools don’t fit well….and there is a huge difference in quality of tools.
* Possibly hard to find service, and, if found, repair probably more than replacement.
* The unit is basically a throw away. OK for an introduction to steam cleaning and could show you what a valuable tool a steam cleaner could be.

Steam Buggy: ($129 - $159)
* Made for TV machine. Shows you what a good steam machine could do, but this is not the machine capable of doing these things in real life.
* The third wheel shown on TV is actually not a wheel, it’s a molded piece designed to look like a wheel on TV.
* Doesn’t really have a boiler; it’s more like a steam iron with a little more pressure.
* No one to service them when they break….and they will break
* It is a throw away unit. OK for an introduction to steam cleaning and could show you what a valuable tool a steam cleaner could be.

Q. I HAVE THE FOLLOWING APPLICATIONS/CIRCUMSTANCES—WHICH MODEL SHOULD I BUY AND WHY?
A. See Below:

A small family restaurant:
For over 3000 sq ft use the VaporJet …you need the longer usage time.
For under 3000 sq ft use the LadyBug XL

A commercial grout cleaning service?
The VaporJet since it is primarily for commercial use and can be used continuously.

A residential cleaning business:
LadyBug XL because of the commercial warranty and lighter weight

A large house over 3,500 sq ft:
LadyBug XL because it rolls easier and keeps the tools with the machine

A ranch house:
LadyBug for up to 2500 sq ft
Lady Bug XL for over 2500 sq ft…rolls easier and keeps tools with machine

Q. DO I NEED A TUFF KIT?
A. Generally, yes.
(Remember that it is the heat and not the pressure or scrubbing that does the cleaning…..and use low steam.)
*Grout, stainless steel grills, and oven racks best cleaned with the brass brush.
*Black iron items and oven insides (not the racks) are best cleaned with the stainless steel.
(if the cleaning action seems to stop, move the metal brush you are using away and wait a short while for the cleaning surface to cool)

Q. HOW DOES THE PLUMBERS HELPER WORK?
A. The heat creates pressure and acts like an air hammer.

Q. HOW DO I USE THE 212 CLEANER?
A. It comes in a crystal/powder form to allow shipping and needs to be diluted and put in a clean spray top bottle.
1. First fill the bottle in which it comes ¾ to the top with warm water and shake to dissolve the contents.
2. Next fill the bottle to the top.
3. Add about 2 inches of this solution to a quart spray bottle and fill to the top with warm water. (This dilutes the crystal/powder about 16:1)
4. Lightly mist (do not soak) the area to be cleaned.
5. Gently work the sprayed solution into any spots or stains with your fingers (yes, it’s perfectly safe).
6. Some spots may need a little more misting. Many spots will disappear with the solution even before steaming.
7. Steam clean the rug following the directions given with the machine.

Q. IF I DON’T LIKE THE VAPOR STEAM CLEANER CAN I RETURN IT?
A. Yes, within 30 days.
* However, you will be responsible for the packing and shipping charges back to us, and you will not be credited for the shipping and handling expense we incurred in delivering the product to you.
* There may possibly be a restocking or refurbishing fee depending on the return condition.
