How 3M Filtrete Filter Performance is Measured :
The efficiency of the 3M Filtrete filters is measured using a Mirco-particle Performance Rating (MPR) rather than the industry standard Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). 3M's MPR test goes beyond the MERV test and focuses on sub-micron particles from 0.3 to 1 micron in size. These smaller particles are the ones that are generally always suspended in the air and very easily inhaled. The MERV test filters on their ability to capture particles from 0.3 to 10 microns in size and MERV ratings lower than 13 do not reflect the test data of a filter's effectiveness at capturing micro-particles between 0.3 and 1 micron in size. The other issue with the MERV test is that testing labs vary tremendously in results which allows for inconsistent ratings.
How it Works:
When your furnace or central air handler fan is on, air circulates in your home and passes through your filter. Filtrete filters from 3M capture particles in two ways: mechanically and electrostatically. All filters perform mechanical filtration by providing a barrier that captures particles from the air passing through the filter. Filtrete filters also have electrostatically charged fibers that work like tiny magnets to attract and capture particles. The electrostatic charge is most effective when your filter is new and clean. As particles build up on your filter, they begin to cover up the charged fibers, reducing the effectiveness of the filters at capturing additional particles. The time frame and extent of the reduction will depend upon the actual usage and conditions in your home. The actual effectiveness of an air filter in allergen reduction depends on a variety of factors including the amount of air that the filter processes, the nature of the allergens, and the rate at which the allergens are being introduced into the home. The 3M Filtrete filters should be changed at least every three months.

This will cause the filter to capture more particles than usual, shortening its life to less tan 3 months or reducing the effectiveness of the filer to capture particles. These conditions include:

To maximize the air cleaning efficiency of your whole house furnace filter it is recommended your HVAC system run as much as possible since no air cleaning occurs when it is off. Most experts agree a minimum run time of 8 to 12 hours daily is necessary to clean the air in your home (depending on air quality). Without the use of the AirCycler HVAC controller, your only choice to achieve this recommended run time is to switch your system to auto fan and it will run 24/7 or take the chance your heating or cooling demands will meet the 8 to 12 hour run time. By using the AirCycler controller you can choose the minutes each hour to run the fan regardless of your home's heating and cooling demands. Since the AirCycler can independently control the HVAC system's fan, you can set it to turn on every 20 to 30 minutes each hour to meet the recommended 8 to 12 hour run time.
